"Thanks to the tournament director for giving us wildcards, it's been a good tournament for wildcards.

"It was my first time at Eastbourne and I hope I can see you guys in the years to come.

"This is the best possible preparation for next week so hopefully I can go on from here."

Your runner-up....Gael Monfils. He made it to his first grass-court final since playing in the junior ranks, and he certainly entertained the crowd this afternoon.

Talking to seagulls, improvised shots and a huge smile in the sun at Eastbourne.

Speaking to Eurosport he said: "Well done Novak, we played for the 14th time and it's 14-0, well done again!

"On a court which isn't my favourite surface I played well so I am very happy. It's been an amazing week."

    And he's done it.

A terrific run from Novak Djokovic ends with victory at Eastbourne.

That's his second title of the year, number 68 in total, and his first grass-court title away from Wimbledon.

I'd say that was a worthwhile week.

Back at it again with the white gulls.

And they're certainly bothering Monfils - he stalls his serve till they've passed. It could be a while.

Monfils in dangerous territory here and now it's match point for Djokovic...

The crowd could be turning here. Monfils has been all smiles this afternoon and the crowd are being charmed. They can feel his surge in confidence.

He takes the first point on the Djokovic serve but can't take advantage of a wide opening on Djokovic's forehand and instead floats a misplaced lob which lands over the baseline.

Djokovic, after a poor slice into the net, wins the game as Monfils goes long once again.

    *Djokovic 6-3 4-4 Monfils

A funny point that one. Monfils comes up to the net but suddenly backs out of the cross-court smash and decides to float it over at an awkward angle. Still, it worked.

A close game as Monfils scrambles his way to game point and excellent ball striking from the back of the court gets him to 4-4.

    He's on the up.

    Djokovic 6-3 4-3 Monfils*

Djokovic is giving himself a real talking to. He looked good for a 30-0 lead but Monfils came towards the net on the following point and Djokovic's passing shot, under pressure, was pretty terrible.

He'll be happier now though. He gives Monfils the runaround and neatly dispatches the Frenchman's high defensive lob to bring up game point.

Monfils runs out of patience and smashes his forehand into the net.

4-3 in the second set to Djokovic.

    *Djokovic 6-3 3-3 Monfils

A crucial time for Monfils to hold serve. But he's looked far more comfortable on his own service game than Djokovic in this set.

He storms into a 15-0 lead but a rather meek passing shot catches the net and lets Djokovic back into the game.

The Serb can't seize the initiative though and lets out a HUGE roar as his woeful shot tips him over the edge. Frustration starting to show.

Monfils wraps up the game without batting an eyelid.

A punishing rally sees Monfils finish the point on his knees but a quick thumbs up to his team lets them know he's not injured.

Djokovic's serve comes good and gets him out of trouble. He leads the second set 3-2.

    Djokovic 6-3 2-2 Monfils*

An uncharacteristic double-fault from Djokovic, his first of the match, lets Monfils back into the game at 30-30.

A poor cross-court forehand from the Serb then goes wide of the line which brings up break point for Monfils.

But he saves himself with a fine serve, Monfils' stretched return only finding the net.

A much closer second set at the moment.

    *Djokovic 6-3 2-2 Monfils

Monfils is certainly enjoying himself out there.

No sign of the knee injury which he picked up in the semi-final aganist countryman Richard Gasquet.

He wraps up that service game with a perfectly-placed forehand which drops, as if by magic, in the right-hand corner of the court.

    All-square in the second set.

Djokovic gets just the piece of luck he needs to get back into the game. His stretched forehand just clips the net and bounces kindly for the Serb.

A shake of hands at the net from the two players - all is forgiven.

And Djokovic takes the intiative to wrap up the game. He's a set and 2-1 to the good now.

Astonishing defence from Djokovic who just won't go away.

But Monfils is playing some irresitible tennis and he fires a forehand winner down the line which finally stumps the Serb.

He's 30-0 up on the Djokovic serve.

World number 16 Monfils shrugs off the last game and quickly dispatches of Djokovic in the next.

He's starting to serve much better, his first serve percentage is back up to 68 now.

    *Djokovic 6-3 1-0 Monfils

Djokovic saves the break point but a huge forehand return from Monfils on the following point brings up a second chance.

The Serb slides as he tries to catch hold of the return and ends up doing the splits. He doesn't look injured though, thankfully.

But it's not to be for the Frenchman. A hard-fought game from Djokovic who out-foxes Monfils with a clever selection of shots.

Monfils looks elastic out there sometimes but Djokovic just coolly takes another game.

    Djokovic 6-3 0-0 Monfils*

Monfils is up against it here in Eastbourne.

This is his 26th final; he's won six and lost 19 of the previous 25 - a record which he will need to put out of his head.

But he's in the first game of this second set. Djokovic tries to steer a backhand down the line but he gets that completely wrong and Monfils crawls to 30-30.

More good play from the Frenchman and Djokovic is forced into a long forehand.

    First break point for Monfils.

And again Monfils fails to control his forehand. The Frenchman is taking risks but it's not paying off at the moment as another sails over the baseline.

And on the next point we are treated to some magical play from Djokovic. He shows wonderful control at full-stretch, a move which would not have looked out of place in the ballet, as the ball drops poetically over the net.

    Two set points for Novak.

And he only needs one. Top class from the world number four.
