Adrian Mannarino shows the nerves as he serves for the set as Gael Monfils takes him to deuce.
But the Frenchman then plays a wonderful forehand down the line to move a point away and then seals the win to take a huge scalp of the 15th seed.
It is the world number 51's second appearance in the fourth round at Wimbledon and equals his best Grand Slam result.
But for Monfils, another second week at Wimbledon slips away.

Andre Agassi, like a tennis Jedi, watches on. Do or do not, there is no try.
He is coaching, but not coaching Novak Djokovic at the moment. He explained to the BBC that he's not a coach, more of a mentor. A guru.
It's working, whatever he's channeling. Djoko holds easily enough again, a bear-like roar from Gulbis. Not happy.

16:29 BST 8 July 2017Gulbis 4-4 Djokovic
'It's only natural to take your pedal off the metal when you've reached Everest'.
A delightful mixed metaphor from Boris Becker as he describes Novak Djokovic's supposed dip in form.
New balls for the Gulbis serve, and Djokovic revels in the extra zip, smashing a cross-court backhand to go 0-30.
Hell of a shot. Gulbis tops one long and it's three break points. Just like that. A double fault and it's back all level.

Ahem. As I was saying...
It's Anett Kontaveit who has taken the opening set over on Court One, after breaking Caroline Wozniacki's serve and smashing a backhand return to put Wozniacki on the back foot.
Kontaveit has beaten Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza this year...

Full house now on Centre as the Pimm's brigade file back in.
Good enough to be in the top 10? On his day. A man on a mission to prove his critics wrong. Start writing the movie script now.
This could be that day for Gulbis who picks off Djokovic with an extravagantly disguised drop shot. No-look stuff.
Add in a 134mph ace and that's 4-2.
Gulbis out to prove people wrongpublished at 16:21 British Summer Time 8 July 2017
16:21 BST 8 July 2017Piers Newbery
BBC Sport at Wimbledon"For me, tennis is an instrument of self-understanding." Gulbis is one of the deeper thinkers on the tour, as evidenced when he spoke during last month's French Open., external A smasher of racquets and slayer of lazy questioning in press conferences, the Latvian is from an affluent background and has been seen as something of a wasted talent, lacking the necessary drive, for much of his career.
However, a succession of injuries have seen him plummet down the rankings and he is determined to prove people wrong and get back near the top. As he says: "You don’t want to be there but it’s not a tragedy.”

For all we talk about the openess of the women's draw, there are six Grand Slam champions in the last 16 so far, and seven of the top 10 seeds.
Could Caroline Wozniacki be the eighth top 10 seed to get through? She lost the first three opening games against Estonia's Anett Kontaveit, before fighting back to take the next three.
We're on serve at the minute, and you can watch that match over here.

16:18 BST 8 July 2017Gulbis 3-2 Djokovic
Gulbis has never won three matches in a row on grass in his career so that's what he's up against. As well as one of the best to ever play the game.
Djokovic knows now that he's in for a test but if it goes over three sets you'd back the Terminator-esque intensity of Novak every time. No matter who he's playing.
He holds with no drama this time, Gulbis not able to wind up for any of the explosive winners that he found in the last Djoko service game.
'Gulbis has top-10 quality'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 8 July 2017
16:17 BST 8 July 2017Mark Woodforde
BBC Radio 5 live at WimbledonGulbis, when he is on it like this, belongs in the top 10 or 15 players in the world. He has such quality. He has also long periods when he can sustain this for four or five and that's enough to take sets and potentially significant scalps.

A hold here would give the underdog a base to win this first set. Not a promising start as he shanks a shot high into the stands, but he finds some more big serves to edge back into the game.
He's averaging 130mph for a first serve. Rapid.
He has the touch too though, finding a deft flicked winner at the net. Holds with an ace.
