    Gulbis 4-6 1-6 Djokovic

Here comes the trainer to see Ernests Gulbis. Looks like a back problem, maybe his side. It's a twisting motion which appears to be giving the big man trouble.

Gulbis has struggled with injuries over the last two seasons and dropped to No. 589 in the rankings on Monday – his lowest ranking since October 2005. He struggled with a shoulder injury in 2016 and has had further injury problems this year – withdrawing from Montpellier and Marseille (right wrist), and from Geneva with a left calf injury. He plays here using a protected ranking of No. 99.

    Gulbis 4-6 1-5 Djokovic

Gulbis is not moving too well and he has in fact called for the trainer. I wonder if he'll see this one out? He will see the trainer at the end of the set.

A seventh double fault for Gulbis is matched by a seventh ace. Bag of nails.

But he holds his serve and ends a nine-game losing streak.

I've seen Gulbis many different times, different occasions and different events where it looks like he has decided he won't take his job seriously. He's said as much, he's said it to me, to the press, to other players.

Still glimpses of his deep-down quality though as Gulbis floats a sliced backhand winner right on to the line. Lovely shot.

And another winner! That backhand is a force. The Centre Court Crowd lap it up. Break point for the big man. He can't take it. Djoko holds with an ace.

To make this a bit of a match, Gulbis has to concentrate on what he did in the first set, strong serving and strong ground stokes. He has to go back to basics.

  11. Another breakpublished at 16:51 British Summer Time 8 July 2017

    Gulbis 4-6 0-4 Djokovic

Gulbis comes in on a wide serve and hits a good-looking volley - but it's wide.

Roger Federer, get warmed up. Don't think this one will be on for much longer. That might be his shot of the day, the Serb hits a sensational passing winner down the line.

Gulbis then double faults again. He's gone here.

The top five guys are incredible front runners. When they smell the bacon, they go for it. While others are happy with just the first set, they see opponents are weaker and they take advantage.

    Gulbis 4-6 0-2 Djokovic

More break points for Novak Djokovic as Gulbis is visibly wilting in the heat. Every point looks a big effort for the big man now. He's being worn down. And Djoko moves eaisly to pick up a half-hit volley and smashes past him for a break.

You can see Djokovic winning this in very quick time indeed now. I think Gulbis may have peaked with those three outrageous winners in the one break.

Djoko wins the opening service game of set two in no time.

It was a great night. We got to meet them and the band like tennis, the drummer especially.

Djokovic can win the set with a break here now then. Both players refuel, looks like a scorching day on Centre now.

Djokovic is at his lowest world ranking in eight years but he will return to No. 1 for the first time since October 2016 if he wins the title here and neither Murray nor Nadal reach the semi-finals.

And he's proving a bit much for Gulbis now as the set wears on, bringing up three break and set points with some relentless returning.

Gulbis volleys into the net and there we go.
