Two weeks ago there were hundreds of players here who have given us the most amazing soap opera but in one more game's time, that could be it, and Wimbledon 2017 will be just a memory and we'll have to wait another 50 weeks to do it again.

Will this be the last game on Centre Court this year?

It's Jamie Murray tasked with serving for the championship...

Cheers ring out around Centre Court, Henri Kontinen says 'no thanks' and makes it 0-15 with a powerful backhand.

That was excruciating. Heather Watson looked destined to reach that Jamie Murray cross-court return, but it sails agonisingly beyond the tip of her racquet.

The big-serving Henri Kontinen brings it back, though, and they're still in it.

    Federer 6-3 6-1 6-4 Cilic

2 July, 2001. At the time it was a shock. Now we see it as a 'changing of the guards' moment.

Some teenage Swiss prodigy called Roger Federer beat seven-time champion Pete Sampras in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

"I didn't think I would be this successful after beating Pete here," says the now 35-year-old Federer.

"Winning eight titles is not something you can aim for. If you do you must have so much talent.

"Ii was just a normal guy growing up in Basel and hoping to make a career on tennis tour.

"I put in a lot of work and it paid off."

    Paid off big time.

    Murray/Hingis 6-4 5-3 Kontinen/Watson*

Henri Kontinen slaps the hand of Heather Watson. A morale-boosting low-five?

Watson slings a return back with some venom from the Martina Hingis serve, but Jamie Murray is there again, sliding across the net to split the defending champions.

Hingis serves for the game... and they are one game away from the title.

    It's the break!

A shriek from Heather Watson as Jamie Murray's delicate slice sends the Brit scuttling towards the net and Watson realises her return isn't making it over the net.

It's Murray and Martina Hingis who have the upper hand in this one now.

Oooo. A return from Martina Hingis catches the net and slightly throws Heather Watson off rhythm, she does get it back, but finds a leaping Jamie Murray in the way, star-fishing like Peter Schmeichel in his prime.

That's some smart tennis from the Hingis-Murray combination... two break points.

Well, this must be the longest game we've seen so far the in the match, and it could prove pivotal.

Jamie Murray lashes his way back to deuce and another mammoth swing from the Scot gives he and Martina Hingis the advantage.

Can they close out? Heather Watson has other ideas... but there's nothing she can do about that Murray ace. Zing. Straight down the middle, and a vital hold.

Heather Watson likes that! She leaps away in delight after a smart volley out wide evades the reach of Jamie Murray and brings up the chance of a break point...

The Scot then sends Watson even further wide with a huge first serve, but it's another break point chance as Kontinen powers back with interest.

    Federer 6-3 6-1 6-4 Cilic

Marin Cilic walks out of the main interview room at Wimbledon to a round of applause, the Croat looking humbled as he thanks the assembled media for their well wishes.

Top man. Next up... you know who!

  13. 'One of the biggest ambassadors of tennis'published at 17:49 British Summer Time 16 July 2017

    Federer 6-3 6-1 6-4 Cilic

Marin Cilic, as you would expect from such a nice bloke, has been speaking glowingly of Roger Federer: "I think his ability and his desire to continue to improve is definitely one of the best in the game.

"Even at the age that he is at now, he's still improving, still challenging himself to get better and better. All credit to him and his team that they find ways to get him better and to another level."He had an unbelievable journey until the final, also winning Halle and getting to the finals without dropping a set, and today also played a great match."Really a great gentleman, extremely one of the biggest ambassadors of tennis."

    Murray/Hingis 6-4 2-3 Kontinen/Watson*

Jamie Murray adjusts his cap, tosses a ball into the air and then changes his mind. A breeze on Centre Court? Maybe, but then doesn't stop the left-armer flinging a serve down the middle that Henri Kontinen just about returns.

Martina Hingis follows Murray to the back of the court. Instructions? Same again, it seems. Another big Murray serve makes it 40-15.

He's managed to neutralise the power of Henri Kontinen so far in this service game, but a couple of cracking returns from Kontinen and then his partner Heather Watson brings this back to deuce.

  15. Cilic 'extremely happy' despite defeatpublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 16 July 2017

    Federer 6-3 6-1 6-4 Cilic

Despite a chastening defeat by Roger Federer, Marin Cilic is taking positives from an excellent grass-court season.

"My level was on a position where it hasn't been before on grass, so I'm extremely satisfied with that. Extremely happy. This will give me much more confidence, much more strength for the rest of the year."I know that my level can even go higher, so that is something that I'm looking forward to. That's something which is definitely making me more happy."With that loss today, obviously it's a sad one, it's a devastating one, but I'm still very proud and thankful for all my team that was helping me to get here."

Henri Kontinen fires down second serves with just as much ferocity as his first.

No nonsense from the Finn. He powers through that service game to edge the defending champions in front in the second set.

  17. Emotional Cilic 'couldn't give best'published at 17:43 British Summer Time 16 July 2017

    Federer 6-3 6-1 6-4 Cilic

Marin Cilic broke down in tears during his straight-set defeat by Roger Federer. The Croat seventh seed has been explaining why:

"It was just a feeling that I knew that I cannot give my best on the court, that I cannot give my best game and my best tennis, especially at this stage of my career, at such a big match."It was very, very difficult to deal with it. You know, that was the only thing.

"But otherwise, you know, it didn't hurt so much that it was putting me in tears. It was just that feeling that I wasn't able to give the best."

    Murray/Hingis 6-4 2-2 Kontinen/Watson*

Jamie Murray reaches out a long left arm as Henri Kontinen looks to tickle a forehand down the tramlines, but that's more frame than strings for the Scot and he can only coax it back into the net.

Kontinen then winds up a big one-handed backhand, but the Finn gets his angles all wrong. Too much top and it's nestled in the bottom of the net.

Martina Hingis double faults, and then drags a Heather Watson return wide. That's deuce, but Hingis shows all her experience to hold.

  20. 'It was tough emotionally'published at 17:38 British Summer Time 16 July 2017

    Federer 6-3 6-1 6-4 Cilic

Beaten finalist Marin CIlic on why he struggled against Roger Federer: "Well, it was definitely one of the unfortunate days for me to happen. I got a really bad blister. Fluid just came down under my callous in the foot.

"Every time I had to do a reaction fast, fast change of movement, I was unable to do that."Obviously was very tough emotionally because I know how much I went through last few months in preparation with everything.

"I just felt it was really bad luck."
