A thumbs up, and a final wave from Federer as he departs Centre Court to more cheers, still holding that trophy aloft with a flourish. He looked a bit reluctant when he was encouraged to kiss it by the assembled snappers, but I bet he doesn't mind really - after all, not too many other people have planted a smacker on that famous pineapple in the past 14 years.

Marin Cilic is also given a rapturous round of applause as he wanders around the court in the opposite direction to Roger Federer.

The final might not have turned out how imagined in his sleep last night, but let's not forget what a great tournament he has had. And there is no shame by getting a pasting from the Wimbledon's greatest male champion of all-time.

Flashbulb lights are illuminating Centre Court, from the throng of snappers crouched in front of the Royal Box end, and from all round the stands.

Roger Federer walks slowly around the perimeter of the most famous court in tennis, pausing every few moments to raise the trophy - a silver gilt standing 18 inches high - to his adoring public.

Everyone wants to capture this piece of sporting history, grabbing their photo to prove "I was there".

The Centre Court crowd was poised, cameras at the ready, when Federer missed that first match point. He did not keep them waiting long.

That's the story of his tournament, really - his seven matches took him a total of 11 hours 37 minutes, the least time of any of his eight titles here.

Federer's children - two sets of twins - look on from the box as their old man is presented with the famous trophy which he knows so well.

I wouldn't be surprised if the kids - older girls Charlene and Myla, and their younger brothers Lenny and Leo - are slightly scared by the noise.

A spine-tingling roar goes up as the Swiss legend is presented with the Gentlemen's Singles Trophy.

Even the coolest of the cool can crack emotionally. Roger Federer smiles at his wife, children and parents in that famous corner of Centre Court, then shed a tear or two in his chair.

The enormity of what he has achieved has hit him. A record eighth Wimbledon title for the Swiss maestro.

Centre Court leaps to its feet, Federer swivels towards his box. Arms raised, eyes blinking in almost disbelief.
