"COME ON MARIN!!!" shouts one bloke on his feet in front of us.

Finally some love for the Croat. He whips off the towel, then strolls back to the baseline with a rapturous applause ringing in his ears.

No-one wants to see this ended by an early exit. Probably not even Roger Federer.

Cilic digs deep - emotionally and physically - as he keeps the points short, a deft touch holding off the Swiss great to seal a much-needed hold.

An ace - his first of the match - steadies the seventh seed before following it up with another for 30-15.

But then he capitulates, lumping a nervy backhand into the tramlines as Federer takes his first break point of the second set.

Can he take fury out on the ball in the opening game of the second set? Nope.

Federer doesn't let him near. A blink-and-you'll-miss-it hold. To love, obvs.

    Anna Thompson

Wimbledon town centre is a mile or so away from the All England Club and a big screen has been erected in the shopping centre. And it looks like shoppers don't want to miss out on the action. Ashley Parr is one of them and said: "It's noisy here and there's a good atmosphere with lots of cheering when Federer won the first set. Most are hoping for a Federer win here."

Marin Cilic had his chance early on, but less than 50% of his first serves have gone in and coming into this match he was in the high 60s.

Cilic gave his chair a whack. He is obviously frustrated with his performance and looking to show a bit of emotion to get back into this match.

If you don't at first succeed, then try, try again. That old adage works for Roger Federer as he knocks a forehand into the tramlines but then recovers with a winner for set point number two.

Cilic might as well have wrapped it up and stuck a bow on top. An absolute gift. The Croat doubles faults on set point...

  20. Cilic battles to hold servepublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 16 July 2017

    *Federer 4-3 Cilic

You've got to feel a little sorry for Marin Cilic. He's getting about as much love as a Leeds United fan on an away day in Cardiff. Or any other town or city.

The pro-Fed crowd barely make a noise as Cilic races 40-0 ahead, looking to arrest the slide of the past couple of games.

But wait! Federer drags himself back with a rasping forehand winner and a dropshot which had more check and backspin than a Tiger Woods approach to a green.

Uh oh, Cilic is having a wobble. The Croat double faults for deuce, only to recover quickly for the hold.
