Basilashvili double faults for the ninth and 10th time in this match at the start of this game. He gifted Edmund a break of serve in the first set and the Briton could really do that again. 15-30. Basilashvili puts his hand over his eyes and shakes his head.

Now long from Basilashvili! "Come on!" screams Edmund. Two break points...

Kyle Edmund's first serve returns to aid him in this latest game and he'll need that if he's going to win this match. We've played an hour and 50 minutes now with the temperatures up at 39 degrees.

Edmund asks for an ice towel as he heads for his chair.

    *Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 1-3 Basilashvili

Basilashvili is saving his best tennis for the break points in this game. A good kicker of a serve to the Edmund backhand and the point is finished off at the net.

Now Edmund goes into the tramlines. Basilashvili keeps his advantage of a break in this third set.

There were four chances for the Briton there.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 1-2 Basilashvili*

Kyle Edmund's head rocks back as he hits a forehand a few yards long as a second break point opportunity in this game comes and goes.

Into the tramlines from Basilashvili. Here's another chance for Edmund. The Georgian waves his arms in frustration.

Whack. Plenty of frustration in that shot from Basilashvili. Backhand winner at around 90mph. Deuce again.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 1-2 Basilashvili*

Edmund takes the first point of Basilashvili's service game. Can he apply some pressure?

Long with the backhand return on the next point. 15-15.

This one is a marathon point, one of the longest of the match. 18 shots. Edmund takes it as his forehand clips the tape and dribbles over. He holds his hand up to apologise. 15-30.

Basilashvili takes the next point with a strong first serve but now another net cord comes to Kyle Edmund's aid. Again this one just dribbles over.

He's fortunate but Edmund has a break point.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 1-2 Basilashvili*

Edmund stops the rot. He comfortably holds serve this time and has a word with a ball boy at the change of ends. Maybe Edmund is indeed struggling in the heat? Let's wait and see what the result of that little chat is.

  7. Heat problem for Edmund?published at 01:50 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

Radio 5 live sports extra commentator at Melbourne Park

You felt Edmund might run away with it at one point in the second set. But you wonder if it's heat related because he's mistimed so many shots.

    *Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 0-2 Basilashvili

"He's completely lost the plot", says Russell Fuller on 5 live sports extra. That pretty much sums it up. Edmund mishits another forehand.

No rhythm and at the moment Edmund can't find the middle of his racquet. Seven games in a row for Basilashvili.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 0-1 Basilashvili*

British number two Kyle Edmund - the only British player remaining in the singles draw remember - starts us off in this third set with a new pink and black shirt over his torso.

It has not done the trick. Wild from Edmund. A forehand whacked way, way long. Really worrying times as the Briton drops a break down right at the start of this set.

It’s hard to give any greater insight from courtside into why Edmund’s game disintegrated so suddenly, he was completely in command, but a bathroom break and a new set might press the refresh button.

Meanwhile it’s all change in the stands, where the temperature is now 38C and those who were here at the start are making a bolt for shade and supplies after baking for 90 minutes.

Anyone see that coming with Edmund 3-1 up? Basilashvili has spun this match on its head with five straight games to win the set.

Kyle Edmund takes a shirt from his bag and strides off court for a comfort break. Basilashvili has one of those ice towels around his neck, sitting on his chair in the shade.

    Russell Fuller
BBC tennis correspondent at Melbourne Park

Everything had been looking so promising for Edmund. But now the temperature is getting pretty close to 40C, this is going to go at least four sets and will be brutal for the players.

No-one saw that coming either. Edmund was going along very steadily but he lost his way.

  13. Game and second setpublished at 01:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-6 Basilashvili

Quite a turnaround. Basilashvili now can't find the court. A forehand into the net and Edmund has the chance to break back.

Can he take it? Nope. Basilashvili too good.

    Now a second set point...

The ball is battered back and forth, Edmund goes for the big forehand... called wide! Edmund disagrees but hawkeye confirms it. Basilashvili takes the set.

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-5 Basilashvili*

What a shot this is. From wide on the backhand side Basilashvili whips the ball with beautiful top spin down the line for a winner.

Two set points to the Georgian...

But now two double faults from Basilashvili! Crazy stuff! Back to deuce.

  15. Postpublished at 01:37 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Barry Flatman
Sunday Times tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 live

This is a big turnaround. Edmund is just trying to hit the ball too hard at the moment.

  16. Postpublished at 01:37 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-5 Basilashvili*

Remarkable. Edmund's game has fallen away and Basilashvili has upped his own game. A brilliant return and now a fourth game in a row for the man from Georgia.

He will serve for this second set.

  17. Postpublished at 01:35 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-4 Basilashvili*

Another one flies off the frame of Edmund. He's looking right into the sun as he's serving at the end the furthest from the TV cameras.

Big trouble now. Edmund winds up to thrash a forehand beyond his opponent but the ball goes wide.

    Break point again for Basilashvili.

  18. Testing times for Edmundpublished at 01:33 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    David Law
Radio 5 live sports extra commentator at Melbourne Park

Basilashvili's body language has changed and he could become dangerous. Edmund is trying to show positivity himself and not show that he might be feeling a bit down after having his serve broken.

His form has started to drift and it's really unpleasant conditions to play in.

  19. Postpublished at 01:33 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    *Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-4 Basilashvili

There's no change in facial expression from Basilashvili despite that break of serve. Not a hint of a smile on that bearded face as he wins another game to edge back in front.

The game was sealed there with a shanked forehand from Edmund that flew out of this small arena. Worrying times for the Briton. He's disappeared in the last couple of games.

  20. Basilashvili breakspublished at 01:30 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 7-6 (7-0) 3-3 Basilashvili*

Well, well. It was all looking so comfortable but Nikoloz Basilashvili is right back in this set.

Three unforced errors from Edmund in that game. Basilashvili roars at himself in approval at the last of them.

    Back on serve.
