  1. Shoulder a recurring concernpublished at 00:47 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

Edmund had a shoulder rub during his previous round but brushed it off when asked afterwards, and it was an injury in the same area that saw him retire from his US Open match against Denis Shapovalov. He seems to be hitting freely enough right now but it’s an ongoing concern.

Temperature update - 35C in the shade of the media seats, with a gentle breeze.

    Edmund 5-4 Basilashvili*

Ah. Beautiful! The point of the match so far as a 17-shot rally ends with a rapid backhand winner from the racquet of Kyle Edmund.

Now he clinches the game with an ace. That's his fifth of the match. As I said earlier, the less running the better out there.

Edmund is looking really strong on his own serve. Can he pile the pressure on the shaky Basilashvili here?

Assuming Edmund doesn't have a problem with his shoulder this match is there for the taking. Basilashvili is having problems with his serve and is struggling for consistency.

    *Edmund 4-4 Basilashvili

It started so well but Basilashvili is struggling now. A poor backhand error and then another serve misses by a distance and that results in the Georgian shouting in frustration.

Kyle Edmund looks to press home the advantage but now his forehand lets him down while Basilashvili's first serve returns too.

The world number 61 levels at 4-4. A real mixed bag.

    Edmund 4-3 Basilashvili*

Edmund gets through his next service game in a flash. Good stuff from the young Briton.

This was the moment he needed treatment earlier when things were not looking so good. Spotted a little stretch of the shoulder muscle a moment ago but he has looked fine since then.

    *Edmund 3-3 Basilashvili

The opportunity slips away for Edmund. I'm not sure what to make of Basilashvili so far. Sometimes he's very good, sometimes the opposite and he ends this game with good tennis to hold.

  7. Break point Edmundpublished at 00:34 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 3-2 Basilashvili*

After three consecutive double faults to end the previous game, Basilashvili makes absolutely certain by floating his second effort in on the first point of this one. The weak effort is gobbled up by Edmund though who crunches a forehand.

There's more evidence of the power 23-year-old Edmund has off that wing! A thumping forehand winner from Edmund.

Now another horrible double fault from Basilashvili! Framed right out of court two. Two break points to Edmund.

Touching wood but there doesn't seem to be any problem with Edmund's shoulder.

    Edmund 3-2 Basilashvili*

I didn't really get a look at whether Kyle Edmund was hampered by a potential injury in that last game with Basilashvili not getting the ball in play on three occasions.

In this one Edmund looks pretty comfortable as he holds serve with ease, again helped by some errors flying off the racket of his Georgian opponent.

A fist pump from Edmund as he strides to his chair for a breather.

  10. Edmund breaks backpublished at 00:28 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    *Edmund 2-2 Basilashvili

    Wow.

The break is handed straight back to Kyle Edmund.

Nikoloz Basilashvili double faults THREE times in his second service game and we're back on serve with little effort needed on the Briton's part.

    A shocker.

    Edmund 1-2 Basilashvili*

Whether he is 100% or not, time has been called and Kyle Edmund has to stride back out there. One to keep an eye on for sure.

  12. Fingers crossed for Edmundpublished at 00:25 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Russell Fuller

Watching the replays there was no sign of grimacing on the serve but there was when he hit his double-handed backhand.

It would be very cruel indeed if his Grand Slam hopes come to an end because of injury.

Let's hope the medical timeout has worked and we hear no more about it.

  13. Edmund receives treatmentpublished at 00:24 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 1-2 Basilashvili*

This does not look particularly good. Just 10 minutes or so in Kyle Edmund has called for a medical timeout.

Edmund is laid on a towel while the trainer applies some pressure to his right shoulder blade.

    Edmund 1-2 Basilashvili*

Kyle Edmund needed to settle and that's what he has done to get his first game on the board with some big serving and hard baseline hitting.

He takes the game to love and each point is nice and short which is good news in this heat.

But what's this?! After three games the trainer is on court, treating Edmund with an issue that seems to be around his shoulder blade.

    *Edmund 0-2 Basilashvili

As David Law pointed out a moment ago, the players seem to be struggling early on from the end Basilashvili is now serving from.

Edmund was squinting and now the Georgian starts his first service game with a double fault. The sun getting in his eyes? Basilashvili is bravely not wearing in a cap for this match.

Edmund races into a 0-30 lead in this game but a shanked forehand, a Basilashvili ace and another error from the Briton sees it slip away.

  16. Basilashvili breakspublished at 00:16 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    Edmund 0-1 Basilashvili*

A shocker of a miss from Basilashvili on the first break point but Edmund goes long on the second.

Not the start British fans were after.

Edmund is squinting a bit. There's such a glare from the sun that comes off this blue court surface. Johanna Konta was asked about it yesterday but she didn't really engage.

Basilashvili looks very cool in these conditions. He looks like he spends a little bit more time in this sort of weather.

    *Edmund 0-0 Basilashvili

A good start for Britain's Edmund - dressed in a black and pink shirt, pink shorts, pink shoes and a white cap - as a big first serve helps him to the first point.

It gets worse from there though as three unforced errors follow. They hand Basilashvili two break points in the first game of the match.

Kyle Edmund bangs down a few more practice serves before heading for the shade.

"First set. Kyle Edmund to serve," says the umpire.

    Here we go.

  20. Who will win?published at 00:11 Greenwich Mean Time 19 January 2018

    David Law
Radio 5 live sports extra commentator at Melbourne Park

It will be about who gets the first strike in and is the most consistent with it. This guy Basilashvili doesn't hang back and we've seen that Edmund is not holding anything back either.

Basilashvili is explosive and if he hits a hot streak then anything could happen and there could be a defeat for Edmund. But Edmund has won their only previous match and is favourite.
