So Rafa Nadal's Australian Open campaign came to a painful end today.

It means world number six Marin Cilic will play Britain's Kyle Edmund in the semi-finals.

Battling it out for a place in the final four of the men's draw tomorrow is defending champion Roger Federer against Tomas Berdych, and world number 97 Tennys Sandgren faces South Korea's rising star Chung Hyeon.

Cilic on facing Kyle Edmund next: "He had an amazing run and a great match today. I have to keep going with my own game. Kyle is also a big hitter so I have to take things into my own hands and deal with my own court in the best way possible."

Of course, Marin Cilic knows how it feels to play with an injury, with the eyes of the tennis world watching intently.

He struggled big time in last year's Wimbledon final and was beaten in straight sets by a certain Mr Federer.

Cilic looks in fine fettle now and here's how he feels about booking a semi-final with Britain's Kyle Edmund.

More from Marin Cilic: "I was playing better towards the end of the match. I think I had a lot of chances in all the sets but Rafa came up with good shots and good serves in critical moments. That's the way he has always been.

"After the tie-break I thought I had to lift up my game. I wanted to serve a bit better and then I started to feel the ball really good. That intensity brought the level of the game up and it was really critical at the end."

Marin Cilic, speaking on court: "It was an unbelievable performance from both of us and it's really unfortunate for Rafa. He always gives his best and it's unfortunate for him to end this way. I was really paying attention to these first couple of games [in the final set] and trying to keep my intensity up. It was important for me to continue with my own game and not look across the net."

There's frustration and fury on the face of Nadal because his body has let him down, but there's delight for Marin Cilic.

And that result means we've got an absolute slog-fest in Thursday's semi-final.

It's going to be world number six Marin Cilic against British number two Kyle Edmund.

Nadal is a player of such integrity. He gives all of himself every second he's on the court. He's even struggling to get up the sets to get off the court. Cilic's body was able to hold up, and Rafa's wasn't.

The world number one can barely walk as he limps up the stairs and into the locker room.

Before exiting the Rod Laver Arena, Nadal threw down his racquet in sheer frustration. He's livid about the outcome.

Even though he's not done it the way he wanted, Cilic looks so strong out there and deserves his place in the semi-final.

A fifth break point against the Nadal serve.

The Spaniard grimaces as he throws down court, and Cilic nets. Another one saved.

The world number one brings up the advantage but spikes a forehand into the net.

Deuce for the fourth time.

Cilic is making Nadal come to the net and he simply can't do it. He's not fit enough.

The Croat brings up a fourth break opportunity but mucks it up again by plonking a forehand wide. He challenges, it's quite a way over in reality.

Back to deuce.

A limping Nadal is facing three break points. He finishes one off with a seething forehand, which he doesn't have to scamper for.

Same again to make it 30-40.

And then Cilic carelessly shanks wide. Nadal's not done just yet!

Rafa is protecting and nursing his body. He's not moving in an extreme way, and he has to against Cilic. His footwork is not quite as precise and he's short on the points.

Marin Cilic holds to love and world number one Rafael Nadal can barely walk, run, or return.

This is a sorry, sorry sight that no one wants to see. Nadal's obviously injured and in a lot of pain.
