    Dimitrov v Edmund

Grigor Dimitrov ended up leaping to Kyle Edmund's aid when these two last crossed paths.

Facing off in the last 16 of the Brisbane International, the pair were locked at 4-4 in the deciding set before Edmund fell awkwardly.

The Briton twisted his ankle and Dimitrov, in a scene fit for any action movie, ran and vaulted the net to check on his opponent.

After treatment, Edmund carried on but lost the match 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-4.

Grigor Dimitrov, last year's ATP Finals champion, brushed past qualifier Dennis Novak in the opening round in Melbourne.

A three hour, 25 minute tussle with Mackenzie McDonald was followed up by a win over world number 32 Andrey Rublev.

Nick Kyrgios, who beat Dimitrov on his way to the title in Brisbane earlier this month, awaited the Buglarian in a fascinating tie.

In a match that swung wildly at times, it was Dimitrov who previaled, beating the home-town favourite in four sets.

    Dimitrov v Edmund

Kyle Edmund started this tournament by claiming the biggest win of his career - a five-set victory over 11th seed Kevin Anderson.

A straight-set victory over Denis Istomin - who knocked Novak Djokovic out last year - was followed by a win over three and a half hours in 40C against Nikoloz Basilashvili.

Finally, an impressive fight back against Andreas Seppi secured him a place in his first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Kyle Edmund was joined in practice the other day by former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson.

Johnasson claimed the title in Melbourne in 2002 having never progressed beyond the quarter-finals of any of his 24 previous Grand Slams.

    A good omen...?

It's a beautiful afternoon at Melbourne Park, around 23C and less breezy than in recent days.

Kyle Edmund will be making his debut on Rod Laver Arena in the relative calm of the afternoon, as opposed to the feverish night-session atmosphere that Grigor Dimitrov knows well after several big matches there in the past, most recently just two days ago.

Edmund enjoyed lots of British support in his first four matches on the outer courts, but it's likely to be a bit less frenetic this afternoon - at least at the outset.
