Marin Cilic's box all applaud in unison as he pops the ball over the net to outsmart Nadal for 30-0.

    Nadal 6-3 3-6 3-2 Cilic*

There's an almighty screech from one of the line judges, who thinks a Nadal hit has gone long. It didn't so the point is replayed and the chair umpire actually says sorry to the world number one.

Nadal goes on to hold to love, which is exactly what he needed.

Ace, double fault, ace. You can't say that Marin Cilic doesn't like to mix it up.

He holds to level the set again.

Marin Cilic's shirt is a little short. It's like someone has put it in the wash and shrunk it.

    *Nadal 6-3 3-6 2-1 Cilic

Cilic looks like he's cruising along to an easy hold before he needlessly pops a volley over the baseline. He's completely overcooked that.

He makes himself feel a bit better with a ninth ace for 40-30, but then double faults for deuce.

    Hummmmmmmmm....

    Nadal 6-3 3-6 1-1 Cilic*

After throwing down an ace to open the service game, Cilic hits a forceful, clean forehand to overpower his Spanish opponent.

All of a sudden, he gets a break point. Just the one...and it's gone when the Croat shoots long.

Same again on the next point. Advantage Nadal.

That goes away too when the top seed nets. Gaaah.

Marin Cilic is being very vocal on court, having recovered from 15-30 to hold.

Is Rafa nervous? Should he be nervous?

More good (but largely expected) news for Kyle Edmund, who is among five players named in Great Britain's Davis Cup squad for next week's World Group match in Spain.

The British number two, who has reached the Australian Open semi-finals, is joined by Cameron Norrie, Liam Broady, Jamie Murray and Dominic Inglot.

The first-round tie from 2-4 February will be broadcast live on the BBC.

"With it being played on their favoured clay surface it's going to be an incredibly tough first round," said GB captain Leon Smith.

"That being said, our team bring form into the tie and have nothing to lose."

Here we go. Heeeerrrreeee we go.

A massive scream of "VAMOS" from Rafael Nadal as he pings a delicate drop over the net after a close-range battle of wits.

The world number one holds to stop the rot.

    *Nadal 6-3 3-6 Cilic

This is only the second set Marin Cilic has taken off Rafa Nadal in their past four meetings. Cilic won the first set when the two met in Basel in 2015, but it's been one-way traffic since then.

Another thing of note...Cilic hasn't lost a game since having a spat with the chair umpire. That's the way to channel your anger!

Nadal's gone for a quick comfort break to get his head back in the game.

"Got it," shouts Cilic as he lands his seventh ace for two set points.

One goes in the bin when the Croat spanks the ball into the net after a short rally.

But then he pulls out another ace. He's got the set!

Cilic really believed and stood firm in his game plan. He's been very offensive and it's paid off for him. He's taking time away from Rafa and forcing him to play a little late.

  16. Cilic breaks againpublished at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 23 January 2018

    Nadal 6-3 3-5 Cilic*

The Spaniard lands a forehand into the net. Cilic earns another break point.

The pair enter a rally and as Nadal tries to backhand and pirouette back to centre, the ball fails to drop over.

The world number six will serve for the set. Wowzers.

This last 20 minutes, Nadal has come down a gear or two. There's not the same speed on his ground strokes.

Cilic is looking strong and focused as he searches for another break.

    Nadal 6-3 3-3 Cilic*

A waste of a break point opportunity from Cilic, as he lofts a poor forehand into the net.

He gets another chance, when Nadal scoops a bent forehand wide.

And he's got it! Now we've got a match on our hands.
