Centre Court breaks out in collective sigh of disbelief, Serena Williams has just missed a sitter of a volley at the net.

She pumps a low forehand into the same spot off a fizzing Kristina Mladenovic return, then yanks a forehand well wide.

    Three break back points.

The sun continues to beat down on Court One with the temperatures up around 30 degrees. Neither player is looking particularly tired despite this match now stretching over the two hour mark.

Serving last in this deciding set, the pressure is always on Venus.

    Double fault. 0-30. Oooof.

    *Mladenovic 5-7 0-1 S. Williams

Kristina Mladenovic has lost five games on the bounce, she needs to stop the rot and hold serve here or this match could quickly disappear into the distance.

She hit more aces, more winners and made fewer unforced errors than Serena Williams, but still lost the first set...

That's a cracking overhead volley from the Frenchwoman to make it 30-0 on serve, but she follows up with a double fault.

And here comes the Serena Express. A leaping, smashed winner, a powerful return.

    Break point.

    *Mladenovic 5-7 0-1 S. Williams

Serena Williams gets the second set under way, and gets Kristina Mladenovic on the run with a deft, dinking slice that the Frenchwoman can't coax back.

Magnificent, bullet-like return from the 25-year-old moments later and that catches the American by surprise - she's not fazed, it proves only a minor blemish on her service game.
