    *Mladenovic 5-7 5-6 S. Williams

Ace number 10 for Serena Williams to bring it to 40-0 on serve, before Kristina Mladenovic gets bat to ball and makes the American stab a baseline stroke into the net.

No bother, ace number 11 follows.

Finally it is over! But it isn't good news for Cameron Norrie and Jay Clarke.

The match started on Wednesday, resumed on Thursday and finally finished on Friday - after five hours of play and nine match points for their opponents.

Marcelo Arevalo jumps on Hans Podlipnik-Castillo before the jubilant pair pose for a picture in front of the scoreboard.

Gladys: Another shocker last year finalist Venus Williams is knocked out of the tournament but it was a wonderful battle, what an incredible tennis display.

    Mladenovic 5-7 5-5 S. Williams*

Blistering speed off a low return by Serena Williams, but it drifts narrowly wide and Kristina Mladenovic holds.

    *Mladenovic 5-7 4-5 S. Williams

Thumping return to a body serve from Serena Williams. She brings it to deuce.

Now the pressure is on Kristina Mladenovic.

The American jabs long with Mladenovic dashing to the net, now can she serve this out?

No! How costly will that miss be? Deuce again.

    *Mladenovic 5-7 4-5 S. Williams

Right then, Kristina Mladenovic to serve to stay in the championships.

Serena ups the tempo, but it's a superb pick-up from the Frenchwoman to remain in the point and Williams cracks the net.

The 23-time Grand Slam champ rattles the ropes from the next point, too - 30-0.

But that's magnificent from Serena, reading the Mladenovic serve and playing a sliced backhand on the spin - 40-30.

    V. Williams 2-6 6-6 (7-3) 6-8 Bertens

    Kim Clijsters
    Four-time Grand Slam champion

You can see the relief in Berten's face. This match had everything, tennis-wise but also mentally and emotionally. Nice to see they brought the best out of each other in the end. Kiki had to be at her best to beat Venus.

  9. Venus Williams outpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 6 July 2018

    V. Williams 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-8 Bertens

If there has been a better match at this year's Wimbledon than that then I haven't seen it.

Two hours 40 minutes of gripping tennis.

In the end it means the eighth of the top 10 women's seed is out.

Only Simona Halep and Karolina Pliskova remain.

    *Mladenovic 5-7 4-5 S. Williams

Huge chance for Kristina Mladenovic, break point after Serena Williams underhits a backhand and watches it slip into the guts of the net.

It's not to be, as she wraps a return from a kicking Serena serve into the tape.

The American scrambles, scuttling into the net after moving Mladenovic around Centre Court and throwing everything into a volleyed winner.

    She holds.

    Back to deuce.

    Match point...

She got a second serve to go at too.

    Mladenovic 5-7 4-4 S. Williams*

We're firing through service games now.

Serena Williams slings down a succession of string-shatterers until one comes of Kristina Mladenovic's frame and flops just over the net.

It seems to give the 25-year-old some confidence, and she powers a cross-court forehand back that Serena can only punch long.

    From 40-0 to deuce.

    *V. Williams 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 Bertens

Kiki Bertens just can't find an all-important return on the deuce side. Win that point and she'll have match point but twice she makes a mess of it.

That's excellent defence from Bertens though, right at Venus' toes.

    Deuce again.

    Mladenovic 5-7 4-4 S. Williams*

Kristina Mladenovic watches a high ball drop out of the SW19 sky, sizes it up on the bounce from mid-court and lashes it down with Serena Williams gambling that the Frenchwoman would go the other way.

Serena's mum is in the Centre Court crowd, looks like she's using the BBC Sport app* to check Venus' score on Court One... *maybe.

    A love hold.

This match has been going on for over two and a half hours now. The crowd are right into it and all groan in unison as Venus puts a smash into the net.

Now a brilliant return from Bertens. Deuce. Bertens is two points away again.
