The world number 138 will play the winner of Nick Kyrgios and Kei Nishikori in the last 16, that one is up next.

And here is Ernests Gulbis: "It's a great day, it's been a great match for me. I didn't think I could win after losing the third set and having served for the set, but he got tired and I played smarter, so I am really glad."

Asked where this performance came from: "I hope I have another four, five years in me so I hope you'll see me around. It comes from practising, playing qualifying here, getting some wins.

"I also qualified for Paris. It's not easy, but when you do it gives you some confidence."

Ernests Gulbis was 5-3 up in the third set and lost it 7-5, it looked for all the world like Alexander Zverev was going to saunter through to the last 16 at that point.

Zverev goes long, and Gulbis is into the fourth round - just brilliant, what a performance!
