But he is doing well, although he is clocking up a lot of miles in his legs over these first four games.

Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, is getting some serious sting off his serve.

He powers to 30-0, before Bautista Agut conjures a response and cradles the gold chain around his neck in appreciation.

Bautista Agut goes 40-15 on serve, but is having to endure some long rallies to win points out there - he takes advantage of another Djokovic approach with a winner down the line.

Roberto Bautista Agut is grafting, but he's finding Novak Djokovic at the top of his game at the other end, smashing a crosscourt forehand winner.

How about that though... the Serb attacks the net, the Spaniard responds by finding the clay outside him with a whipped forehand.

Fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov is also in big trouble having lost the first two sets of his match against Spain's Fernando Verdasco.

The Bulgarian has made a whopping 37 unforced errors so far and will need to find his form quickly.

Their last four matches have all gone to a deciding set so the spectators could be in for a long one.

Bautista Agut did very well to hold serve. He had to show a lot of composure to stave off the break points.

He is going to have to serve well and look for the forehand after the serve to get Djokovic on the move and on the stretch rather than have him dictate from the centre of the court.

Sizzling. Djokvic pops an ace down the outside of the box that has Bautista Agut swinging at Fresh Parisian air. And then doubles, his second of the match.

Eventually the Spaniard closes out to claim a well-earned hold of serve.

Novak Djokovic attacks the net, but Roberto Bautista Agut hooks a passing backhand beyond the stranded 20th seed. Lovely.

He follows up with a forehand to the net, and we're back to deuce. Both players being made to work here.

Germany's Alexander Zverev, the second seed, is facing a battle to stay in the French Open after losing the third set to Damir Dzumhur, the 26th seed from Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Zverev won the first set but now trails two sets to one and cannot afford any more mistakes to reach the last 16.

Djokovic looking good from the baseline, but this time a deft chip drops short and the 31-year-old then pings a return into the tape.

"It doesn't sound right to have Djokovic at 22 in the world but what it does make for is some tasty first-week encounters at Grand Slams. It's like what we we had when Del Potro was on the comeback trail a while back.

"We will see this sort of thing more next year when it is 16 seeds at a Grand Slam."

Roberto Bautista Agut gets some pace behind that first serve of his, but Novak Djokovic is able to engage the Spaniard in a rally.

The Serb pulls his opponent one way and then the next, before Bautista Agut fires into the base of the net.

Again Djokovic takes control, and again we see that sliced backhand - Bautista Agut doesn't quite have the legs.

That's better from the former world number one, getting Bautista Agut on the run with a delicate slice over the net and then storming through to take his opening service game.

It will be Novak Djokovic to serve first... and he opens with a double fault.

It's been an emotionally difficult time for Roberto Bautista Agut at Roland Garros, having lost his mother Esther on 21 May - just days before the tournament began.

A Spanish journalist told me earlier it is believed to be a sudden death with Esther only in her mid-to-late 50s.

Bautista Agut said earlier this week her death has been "hard to handle" but added he felt the best thing for him was to continue playing.

"I thought it was best to come here and take a step forward, not hide and not stay at home, keep fighting like this and that's what I've done," said the world number 13.

Novak Djokovic could reach the round of 16 at a major for the 43rd time today and join Jimmy Connors in second place on the list for most round of 16 appearances at the Grand Slams in the Open Era.

Roberto Bautista Agut has himself reached the round of 16 at the majors on nine occasions.

He is now seeded higher than Djokovic at a major for the first time.

The Spaniard is bidding to reach the round of 16 here for the third straight year and equal his best Grand Slam result.

Djokovic lost to Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals last year, making it his earliest exit at Roland Garros since 2010.
