    *Garbine Muguruza 5-2 Maria Sharapova

Muguruza was two points from the set, but not this time, Garbine.

Sharapova makes sure the opening set has more life in it, although now she has to break the third seed's serve.

    Garbine Muguruza 5-1 Maria Sharapova*

We were given a sensational game yesterday as Marco Cecchinato defeated Novak Djokovic in the men's quarter-finals, but this one is yet to excite in the same way.

Sharapova continues to struggle with her first serve and makes more unforced errors than we would have expected. It is 30-30, Muguruza two points from taking set one.

    Garbine Muguruza 5-1 Maria Sharapova*

Muguruza's first ace of the match seals the sixth game. There were signs of encouragement for Sharapova in that last game, but it is still one that gets away from her.

The Russian will now be serving to stay in the opening set.

Definitely Sharapova's confidence has seeped back into her game after that very edgy start where we saw three double faults in the opener.

    *Halep 3-5 Kerber

Simona Halep lost the first four games in the opening set of her quarter-final against Angelique Kerber, before winning the next three.

German Kerber had a chance to make it 5-2 with a break point a moment ago, but Halep scrambled back to hold.

However, the world number one now has to serve to stay in this first set.

A confidence-building well-time drop shot from Maria Sharapova gives her her first point of the sixth game for 0-15. Can she build on that?

    *Garbine Muguruza 4-1 Maria Sharapova

It has taken almost 30 minutes, but Maria Sharapova is now up and running. A much-needed perfect service game, winning the fifth game to love.

Still a long, long way back though if she is to pull this set out of the fire.

  8. Will we see Murray at Wimbledon?published at 13:40 British Summer Time 6 June 2018

Andy Murray is such a good grass-court player that he will feel he could win several rounds against most players even at 75% fit.

But until we see him play a full-on set we won't know how fit he is.

The first week of a Slam is easier for a high-quality player than a tournament like Queen's where you could face a top-ranked player in the early rounds.

You could have three pretty easy matches at Wimbledon against players that don't particularly like grass.

I just hope Andy doesn't come back at half tilt but comes back ready to win and playing relatively unencumbered.

    Garbine Muguruza 4-0 Maria Sharapova*

Those that got to their seats early will be very happy if they are cheering on Garbine Muguruza. That's now 4-0 for her and already looking like the first set is in the bag.

Sharapova has not helped her own cause with four double faults and 10 unforced errors in only four games.

Despite the later start, the crowds have been very relaxed about getting to their seats for these women’s quarter-finals. The biggest crowds are found in the corridors waiting for a change of ends.

Garbine Muguruza has not dropped a set on her way to the last eight (although her previous opponent Lesia Tsurenko only lasted two games before retiring through injury).

Nothing in these opening exchanges suggests that record is going to be damaged today.

Girl: Can people stop complaining about the small crowd at the French Open. It will NEVER change. The French will turn up when they are ready. It's their party and they can be late if they want to be late.

Holly Day: This screeching should be measured on a Richter scale! Serious decibels.

  13. Halep breaks backpublished at 13:34 British Summer Time 6 June 2018

    *Halep 2-4 Kerber

Simona Halep has pulled one of those breaks back over on Suzanne Lenglen.

The Romanian now trails 4-2 to German Angelique Kerber. The winner of that one faces the winner of this one...

  14. Muguruza breaks againpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 6 June 2018

    *Garbine Muguruza 3-0 Maria Sharapova

Yet another double fault takes Sharapova's total up to four, and that gives Muguruza another chance of a break.

This time the Spaniard takes it after sending her opponent running around the court. That gives her space to unleash a fine forehand which Sharapova dashes to get to, she does so, but has not got enough on it to get it back over the net.

A wonderful start for Muguruza, who now has a double break.

Game number three has taken 10 minutes and counting. Muguruza is looking for a double break, Sharapova doing everything she can to hang on to her serve.

    Garbine Muguruza 2-0 Maria Sharapova*

Maria Sharapova is already having to fight to stay in this set a lot harder than she would have expected.

Break point number six already is saved, thanks to a fine first serve and Muguruza has to stretch and can only send the return longer than hoped for.

    Garbine Muguruza 2-0 Maria Sharapova*

Sharapova screeches at the top of her voice as she sends away a one-handed forehand winner. That saves another break point. That is five she has faced in only two service games, and Muguruza has converted one of those, in the opening game.
