Thiem once again shows he has the more powerful serve with his fourth ace - down the T - to bring up 40-0.

After every winning Nadal game, a sea of Spanish flags are unfurled. A Mexican Wave at the changeover helps reveal tens of silk Rojigualda in the top tier.

You can't say the Rafa fans don't come prepared.

I had to wait for mini-flags to be dug out of the bag, and face-paint applied by a three-pronged lippy, before we got the perfect shot of this lady from Murcia and her two nieces.

That first set was one of the best sets of tennis the tour has seen this year - and probably will see for the rest of the year.

Should Thiem have done better in that game?

Nadal fails to punish Thiem for a poor drop.

    40-0.

    Love hold.

    Nadal 6-3 4-4 Thiem*

What a backhand winner from Thiem - 96mph with whip.

Nadal then goes a few cms long with an angled shot from the back.

Thiem is coping with the pressure so far.

    30-0.

Two Austrian blokes sitting behind the umpire's chair start a chant of 'Dominic, Dominic' - followed by a trio of claps - at the changeover.

Turns out it is only our friends Alexander and Horst from Vienna! (You will remember them if you were paying attention at the start.)

Suddenly their encouragement spreads around the stadium, forcing the Rafa fans into a response of their own.

    *Nadal 6-3 3-4 Thiem

Nadal produces the universal 'new balls' gesture and then slaps a forehand into the net.

Thiem scrambles to get to the ball in the next point but returns long.

Nadal pumps his fist. Nice to see him happy.

    15-15.

    30-15.

This is where the sets can turn around. We've just finished the seventh game. The crowd are getting into it and the atmosphere is great. I am sure they would love to see a break from Thiem because they want to see an epic match.

    Tie-break anyone?

    Nadal 6-3 3-3 Thiem*

Thiem is impressing on the points but using a lot of energy. He finally swats away his opponent after a succession of smashes.

    30-0.

He then goes long with a tired forehand from the back.

It's been a totally different set to the first set. There's a bit of a dip in the standard and focus, which is normal after such an intense first set.

Just a reminder of how long Thiem has spent on court here over the past fortnight before this match:

15 hours and 25 minutes, compared to 13 hours and 24 minutes for Nadal.

Plus the Austrian is playing for the fourth day in a row.

Thiem still hasn't won a point on the Nadal serve in this set.

Sho: Thiem is serving at over 80% and is still having to battle to win his service games. Apart from aces Nadal is returning pretty much everything else. I don't know how you win in that situation.
