The intensity is perhaps not what it was about half an hour ago. We haven't had a deuce point let alone a break point in this second set so far.

Thiem seems like he's taking a bit of a break in this game. Are the exertions in yesterday's semi against Djokovic catching up on him?

    Game.

The fluorescent green shirt of Nadal means sometimes you lose the ball in the shirt. I'm not sure that colour shirt should be allowed.

Matthew Hulbert: As much as it'd be kinda cool to see Thiem win, I'm still #TeamRafa, external. He's so, so good. But good enough today? Time will tell.

    40-15.

This should be Thiem's now but an error from the Austrian results in yet more mutterings.

You could throw a javelin, shot put, kitchen sink and a plane at Nadal and he would still manage to come out on top.

The Spaniard smacks a backhand down the line.

    0-15.

Nadal then comes back down to earth with an easy smash that he thumps into the netting.

Thiem has to keep on going after it. He's got to keep being aggressive and being physical out there.

Naveed Afzal: THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SETS OF TENNIS I’VE EVER SEEN!!!! Even though I’m a @RafaelNadal, external fan I have so much respect and admiration for the style of game, power and speed of @ThiemDomi, external

Monty Moncrieff: What a first set! I'm #TeamRafa, external all the way, but a 6-3 scoreline seems astonishingly unfair to Dominic Thiem who did way more than that suggests Brilliant @rolandgarros, external final so far.

Joel Newnham: I fear Thiem has run out of steam. The next 2 sets could be 6-1 6-1 and game over.

    *Nadal 6-3 0-1 Thiem

Thiem has a great chance to win the first point with a rabbit-punch forehand but the ball slaps the net.

If the tennis gods start favouring Rafa then we could see the Austrian's morale levels drop.

  17. Not good reading for Thiem...published at 15:10 British Summer Time 9 June 2019

Based on their past matches against each other, Nadal is now likely to go on and win....

Ten of their 12 meetings have been decided in straight sets, and only once has the first-set loser gone on to win. That was at last year’s US Open after Nadal failed to win a game in the opening set.

How demoralising is that? He's put absolutely everything on the line and Dominic Thiem loses the first set 6-3.
