Dennis Ethan: Unbelievable tennis on Court Philippe Chatrier!

Charlene Beedie: Do not underestimate Thiem. It was only a matter of time before he broke Nadal given the way he is playing. Extraordinary tennis.

Edward Ditchfield: Supposed to be writing a conference paper, but keeping one eye on the tennis. Hopefully Thiem can be the clay court rival needed to stop Roland Garos just being a procession.

Nadal is already talking to himself, slightly frustrated.

Carlos Moya, in his box, tells his pupil to take a chill pill.

    15-30.

This is the problem against Rafa, if you have any fractional lapse he pounces.

Thiem took paint-stripper and threw the lot at the wall in that rally.

That's just to get to 0-15. It's tiring watching this.

    Wrong-footed forehand winner.

    Textbook.

What did he have for brekkie?

Outside Chatrier before the match, the number of Spanish flags, football shirts and face paint seemed to indicate the stadium would be pro-Nadal.

Apparently not. Many inside Chatrier jump to their feet in celebration when Thiem put away that break point.

Still can only see a smattering of Austrian red and white, so assuming the Parisians fancy seeing a new King of Clay crowned.

    0-40.

Thiem goes long as he retrieves a sliced backhand.

The Austrian's flat forehand just about creeps in.

    Two more to save.

Yes, Nadal did finally smash home the winner but Thiem is picking up nearly everything. He is trying to tire out his opponent.

    0-15.

    Make that 0-30.

    Hmmm...surely he won't break back?

A well-deserved break. He's been brave, bold and tactically astute. He's physically standing toe-to-toe with Nadal. He looks physically stronger.

This is exactly what we wanted to see in this final. We knew Thiem had to get off a great start here to win his first major and he has done. This has been electrifying.

    Break point!!!

    *Nadal 2-2 Thiem

We all know about Nadal's stamina in a GS final, but what about Thiem's?

Could he go five in this pressure-cooker? And against a player, whose levels rarely drop?

    30-15.

Nadal knows the importance of making a quick start.

Extinguish any threat early on, make Thiem chase and put doubt into his head. And then take control from there.

We've already seen two running under-arm fist pumps from Rafa.

That's the sign for 'I mean business'.

It's a very promising start for Thiem. When we all say we expect Nadal to win it's because it will be so hard for him to win three sets against him here. But the sets are going to be competitive.

    *Nadal 2-2 Thiem

Thiem's turn to pull out the drop - Nadal jogs towards the ball before realising that it's pointless.

The 25-year-old Austrian is serving well so far.

At 40-15 Nadal has the chance to put more pressure on his opponent but his attempted punchy forehand clips the net and lands in the moat.

I love the emotion from Nadal with the fist pump. He knows how big the early stages of this first set are. It looks like we're watching a video game the way these guys are playing. It's quite sensational.

Another pulsating rally ends with a soft-hand drop by Nadal.

He douses the mini-threat with an ace.
