    *Williams 4-6 4-4 Gauff

Williams has advantage but a fluke forehand from Gauff deceives Williams and lands in.

Gauff follows that up with a dose of superb athleticism which forces Williams to go long.

    Break point....

    *Williams 4-6 4-4 Gauff

The net cord comes to the 39-year-old five-time winner's rescue. No apology, but why should she.

However, an error on the following point brings up deuce.

    Who's your money on?

  3. The end is nigh for Munarpublished at 19:13 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Edmund 6-4 6-4 3-0 Munar

We are close to the end here on Centre Court. A delicious sliced backhand volley from Edmund fades away from Munar at 30-30 and he has a chance for a double-break in the third set.

He gets it too, when Munar dumps a tired backhand overhead into the bottom of the net. That was a shot straight out of my locker, sadly for the Spaniard.

    *Williams 4-6 4-4 Gauff

    This is a huge game.

Williams goes wide by inches. She queries the decision but does not challenge.

    30s each.

  6. Edmund closes in on round twopublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 6-4 2-0 *Munar

"Edmund wants to get this over with as quickly as possible," says John McEnroe... as the British number one holds to love.

If he gets through this - as now looks very likely - the British number one will play another Spaniard, the 35-year-old Fernando Verdasco in round two.

  7. Williams breaks backpublished at 19:09 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Williams 4-6 4-4 Gauff

    Another double fault.

    Williams breaks back.

    What now Cori "Coco" Gauff?

  8. Edmund breaks againpublished at 19:08 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Edmund 6-4 6-4 1-0 Munar

"Edmund's backhand has been solid today," says John McEnroe as Kyle slams a winner down the line.

His forehand has been a little more erratic but it has delivered when it has mattered - like it did here at 30-40, when he put away a booming forehand to break Munar again.

    Williams 4-6 3-4 Gauff*

    Signs of weakness o'clock.

Double fault and then Gauff overreaches to meet a return.

    0-30.

The teenager then goes far too long with a lob.

Williams has her first break point in 63 minutes of tennis. Two of them in fact.

    To be continued.

Men's 16th seed Gael Monfils had established a two-set advantage over Ugo Humbert, but Frenchman Humbert is attempting to push his compatriot to a fifth set after winning the third on court three.

2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko finds herself trailing against Hsieh Su-wei over on court 18, having losing the opening set 6-2.

Women's 14th seed Caroline Wozniacki is a break down at 3-4 against Sara Sorribes Tormo on court two, and Victoria Azarenka is currently in action against Alize Cornet on court 12 with the score at 4-4 in the first.

    Williams 4-6 3-4 Gauff*

Yes, we did just compare Cori "Coco" Gauff to Stephen Hendry, but if you were to pick a tennis player to compare her actual playing style to then perhaps Steffi Graf would be a good choice.

Williams holds to love, as Gauff eases the pressure on the pedal.

    *Williams 4-6 2-4 Gauff

First serve errors begin to creep in but Gauff still manages to ease herself to 40-0.

Small hiccup before she holds once more.

Do you have a weakness Coco?

  13. Munar takes time outpublished at 19:02 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 6-4 0-0 *Munar

Munar has left the court for what I will politely term a "comfort break" before he starts the third set.

Let's not forget, Venus Williams is one of Cori Gauff's "idols". Venus and her sister Serena are, she says, the reason Gauff picked up a tennis racquet in the first place.

And now she's beating her at Wimbledon. That's the stuff dreams are made of.

  15. Game and second set Edmundpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 6-4 0-0 *Munar

Edmund is still hitting some huge forehands, Munar is still making a lot of noise when he gets them back.

He doesn't get enough of them back, though, and when Edmund loops one on to the line, that brings up another three set-points.

Will he waste them, like he did in the first set? No. Another big forehand winner leaves Munar chasing thin air, and he is soon heading back to his seat with the Brit two sets to the good.

  16. Gauff breaks againpublished at 18:57 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Williams 4-6 2-3 Gauff*

And like Hendry did to his opponents on the green baize, Gauff is doing the same to Williams on the green turf.

Double fault brings up three break points.

Another hands the 15-year-old her second break of the match.

  17. What's happened on day one so far?published at 18:56 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

Alexander Zverev walks off court after losing to Jiri VeselyImage source, Getty Images

We haven't been short of surprises so far on day one at Wimbledon.

World number two Naomi Osaka is out, after losing 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 to Yulia Putintseva on Centre Court.

In the men's draw, both sixth seed Alexander Zverev and seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas have been eliminated.

Tsitsipas found himself on the wrong end of a five-set thriller, as Italy's Thomas Fabbiano progressed 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 shortly after Jiri Vesely recorded a 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5 win over Zverev.

Meanwhile, there were straight-sets victories for both men's world number one Novak Djokovic and 2018 finalist Kevin Anderson against Philipp Kohlschreiber and Pierre-Hugues Herbert respectively.

  18. More set-points needed for Edmundpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Edmund 6-4 5-4 Munar

A couple of quality moments from Edmund, including a peach of a backhand drop-shot move him to 0-40.

Can he take any of these set-points? No.

Two big serves dig Munar out of his hole, before Edmund puts a forehand approach into the net. We are back to deuce... and Munar pulls out two more first serves to hold, eventually.

  19. Postpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Williams 4-6 2-2 Gauff

There are shouts of, "Let's go Cori, let's go!" inside Court One - is that annoying?

Gauff puts spin on her shots, but they are generally quite flat - with the teen it just seems to be about power and accuracy.

The way she is going about her business seems quite metronomic.

We're going big here but it's quite.... Stephen Hendry-esque.

  20. It was worth the wait...published at 18:52 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 5-3 *Munar

This was the moment Edmund took the first set. It was worth the wait.

The 30th seed needs a solid service game to stay in control of this second set, and delivers precisely that. When he gets it right, Munar cannot live with his power.
