Abid: Disappointingly, both Zverev and Tsitsipas have lost in the first round. You wonder when one of these new generation of players will pose a real threat to the big 3. They are in a league of their own.

Stephen: I do think Tsitsipas will be the next new name on a grand slam trophy. Possibly not on grass and obviously not this year at Wimbledon but reckon he’ll be a US Open or Australian Open winner at some point. Got immense talent.

  5. History made: Gauff breaks Williamspublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Williams 2-3 Gauff*

Gauff goes 30-0 up on the Williams serve, which includes a beautiful lob over her opponent - bear in mind the veteran is 6ft 1in.

Williams pulls it back to 30s each but then finds the net.

Gauff then somehow keeps the next point alive with a brilliant pick-up - Williams goes for broke with a double-hander but it's wide.

  6. Munar starts the second set with a bangpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 0-1 Munar

Munar's head has not dropped despite losing that epic game at the end of the first set. He is still scampering around the court, and finding some big winners too... which help him hold to love.

Finally! A loud roar greets Edmund taking that first set at last.

A mixture of joy, relief and how-did-he-mess-it-up-so-many times? And that’s probably what Edmund himself is thinking too.

  10. Game and first set (at last!)published at 18:18 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 0-0 Munar

He's done it... just the 10 set-points needed by Kyle Edmund to put Munar away.

It was quite simple in the end, with Edmund bossing two successive points from the back of the court, and bringing mistakes from his determined opponent.

  12. Will this game ever end?published at 18:16 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 5-4 Munar

Suddenly the boot is on the other foot. Munar senses some anxiety in the Edmund serve - understandably - and puts him under pressure.

Edmund has two break points to save, and does so. This game has been going on for more than 10 minutes now.

  14. And waiting....published at 18:14 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 5-4 Munar

    This time? Yes.... no!

Edmund does everything right as he moves Munar around the court before coming into the net for the kill, but then gets that shot badly wrong - his half-volley flies into the crowd.

How about set-point number nine? Er, no. This time Edmund is into the net and connects with his volley, but it is loose and Munar darts in to put away the winner.

Cori Gauff has got a fair few fans in the crowd. Just before Williams started her second service game, a small group chimed up: “Let’s go Cori, let’s go!”

Cue a few chuckles around the court.

Gauff is holding her own early on. She doesn’t look daunted by the occasion in the slightest!

  17. Postpublished at 18:13 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Williams 2-1 Gauff*

Relatively straightforward for Williams, who even at the age of 39 can thunder the ball down with plenty of weight.

One double-fault, but we'll let her off.

  18. Edmund still waitingpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 5-4 Munar

Edmund slows everything down, but it still goes wrong. A backhand loops long and Munar survives for a seventh time.

  19. Edmund back to deucepublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 5-4 Munar

Edmund still can't finish this one off. He wins an epic rally to set up a fifth set-point, but then Munar finds a deep return to bring us back to deuce.

Set-point number six? That's a double-fault. We are back to deuce. The crowd are trying to help the British number one here, giving him a round of applause as he tries to get the job done at the seventh time of asking...

  20. Postpublished at 18:10 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Williams 1-1 Gauff

Gauff has a big serve and shows that she is willing to attack as she comes to the net to power home a forehand winner for 40-15.

And how does she seal her opening service game? With an ace.
