    Williams 4-6 2-1 Gauff*

Williams has been made to call upon her energy reserves to swat back what Gauff is throwing at her - at the moment it's a lot.

The 39-year-old tennis great holds with a flat forehand swipe that even the teen can't reach.

  2. Munar holds and is hanging onpublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Edmund 6-4 4-3 Munar

Munar has lost his last seven matches on all surfaces, but he is hanging in there in this one. His first serve brings him some joy here - and seems to be the key to him staying in this match. He wins 63% of points on his first serve, and only 47% on his second.

You get the feeling that the Centre Court crowd is not full of confidence in the British number one.

A dash to the net is greeted by a sharp intake of breath - they’ve seen quite a few simple shots missed - but this time he puts away the volley.

Munar is frustrated and his confidence is dipping. There have been games he could and should have won.

    Edmund 6-4 4-2 *Munar

That line judge is still making sure everyone hears her calls - to the amusement of the crowd.

Edmund, meanwhile, settles himself and finds the corners of the court with a couple of forehands. He holds, but it was far from convincing.

    Williams 4-6 1-1 Gauff*

Gauff holds to love courtesy of another error from Williams, who comes to the net to ease her predicament head on but instead finds the 'out of bounds' area.

  7. Edmund makes some mistakespublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 3-2 *Munar

Edmund cannot take his foot off the gas just yet - as proven by a couple of loose shots that give Munar a chance to break back.

The mistakes keep coming too - and surprisingly they are off the Edmund forehand. Munar is about a mile behind the baseline when he is returning the ball, but he is doing enough to stay in the point... and keep the pressure on the British number one.

    Williams 4-6 1-0 Gauff*

Williams has managed to get 70% of her first serves in but has to keep hitting the sweet spot in order to get the better of Gauff at the moment.

This is a teenager - only 15 at that - who has made only three unforced errors so far.

    THREE!

  10. Edmund in cruise controlpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Edmund 6-4 3-2 Munar

It is Edmund's backhand that does the damage here, helped by some sloppy shots by Munar. The Spaniard made plenty of noise but Edmund broke him very easily.

The British number one is in control of this match and, as Andrew Castle has just pointed out, the good news is that there is no sign of his problematic knee either.

  11. Game and first set Gauffpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Williams 4-6 Gauff

"Coco" launches a first serve that Williams completely misjudges. Great power and accuracy.

She then comes out on top in a 15-shot rally. 30-15.

40-15 with another ace and she affords herself a fist-pump.

    Then boom!

Gauff takes the first set as Williams finds the net.

It's fair to say she has a bright future ahead of her.

Williams eases through the service game to love - was Gauff preserving?

  13. Edmund holds with easepublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 2-2 *Munar

If anyone on Centre Court was dropping off after a long day of tennis they were just rudely awakened by a screaming line judge - who just let pretty much everyone in SW19 know that ball was out.

The game itself is much less of a commotion for Edmund, who puts away a couple of big groundstrokes to hold again. He has not been broken since his first service game of this match, which was more than an hour ago.

Coco hits the right shots at the right times - and hits through any fears or nervousness.

All the hype surrounding the match, the pressure is on Venus' side of the court. It looks like she is still struggling a bit with it.

  15. 'Keep the intensity high'published at 18:30 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    *Edmund 6-4 1-2 Munar

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

Edmund has got to keep the intensity high. That game was one where he could have got the break. Munar has been battling but does not have much confidence.

  16. Munar making Edmund thinkpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Edmund 6-4 1-2 Munar

Edmund is never going to get over-powered out there, but he is occasionally out-thought. Munar never seems to win a point the same way twice, but he wins four of them here to hold again. A frustrating one for Edmund because, again, he had his chances.

  17. ‘My teachers don’t know I play tennis’published at 18:28 British Summer Time 1 July 2019

    Katie Falkingham
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

Cori Gauff has admitted some of her teachers at school didn't know she played tennis until this week!

She's also a new name for many in the tennis world. In the press room first thing this morning, I overheard a journalist asking a WTA official how to pronounce her surname.

In case you were in a similar boat, it's pronounced 'Goff' - rhymes with cough, scoff, boff etc...

    Williams 3-4 Gauff*

Venus Williams is on the attack to try to retrieve the situation - but her pressure at the net does not pay off as she hits long.

    30-30.

Nevertheless, Williams - winner of five Wimbledon titles - sees off the young pretender.

Gauff goes to her seat and looks calm and focused.
