Both players are tired, but the rallies are getting longer, not shorter. It is a real war of attrition out there now, and it is Sousa who comes out on top, although I am not entirely sure how.

One rally ends with Evans on his belly at the net and the ball flying beyond the Portuguese's baseline. Another sees Sousa claw two smashes back before Evans sends a third one long.

The end result is that Sousa holds.

Agony for Evans at 15-all, when he sets up the point to perfection but takes the wrong option with Sousa at his mercy at the net, and ends up gifting him an easy volley.

He needs to forget that straight away, and is helped when he correctly challenges when his next serve is called long. He still needs to win this point though, and he does it with a lovely short sliced shot that just clears the net and barely bounces.

That brings Evans back to 30-all, but he is soon back in trouble with a double-fault.

So, break-point, and breaking point for Evans sliced backhand. Sousa keeps asking questions, and eventually Evans drops one too short. It barely reaches the net, let alone gets over it... and we are back on serve. I can't take much more of this.

Andy Murray, after mixed doubles win alongside Serena Williams, tells BBC Sport: "I obviously lost in the men's doubles so all my energy is on this. It was a good start, we returned good and both of us served well."

Who's the boss? "We are both the youngest siblings so we are used to being bossed."

And fitness? "My back was a bit stiff after the doubles and the hip is fine."

Evans gets to 0-30 again on the Sousa serve. Will more break-points follow, to add to the 22 he has had in this match?

YES - eventually - when a Sousa volley flies wide to leave him at 15-40. The Portuguese player is not happy, because he felt he should have had a let on his first serve.

More importantly, can Evans break? YES. YES he can. a forehand into the corner is followed by an overhead winner on to the same spot.

Evans has been a break up in all five sets... can he see this one out?

You can see as the match went on they got better and better. They served well and the returns were fine and there some nice moves up at the net.

"When you have a change of condition, even though they haven't been off court too long, the players are entitled to a five-minute warm-up," explains Tim Henman in the BBC commentary box.
