"My knee feels great. I couldn't be happier with it. I'm excited to test it out and keep going.

"Someone told me I shouldn't look at the records anymore and that is what I have been doing.

"I'm on this journey of doing the best I can and playing the best I can when I can.

"I felt the support and the love [from the crowd], and I appreciated it. I wanted to do better.

"[Roger and I] are probably not going to be out here in three, four, five years so the opportunity is now."

    More from Serena...

"I definitely knew she was playing her heart out, so it was what did I need to do to get to that level?

"I don't know if there is anything I could have done different. I gave a great effort for this fortnight. If anything, I could learn to be like Simona and play my heart out.

"I feel like I'm still incredibly competitive, otherwise I wouldn't still be out here. I'm on the right track, I'm going in the right direction in terms of getting back to where I need to be."

  5. I just have to keep trying - Williamspublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 13 July 2019

    More from Serena Williams...

"Not being injured at this tournament was a real positive for me. I just have to keep going and keep trying, and just keep moving forward.

"Any loss for me is not easy. But when someone plays lights out tennis, there's not much you can do. You just have to understand that was their day today. Hopefully I can raise the level of my game some time.

"I'm always expected to win but it's different circumstances for me now. It's been an unbelievable effort to get to my last few Grand Slam finals."

Serena Williams has been speaking to the press...

"Simona played great. It wasn't a surpise for anyone to play great against me. I made a lot of errors.

"I have to figure out a way to win a final. Maybe playing other finals outside of Grand Slams would be helpful to get me in the groove.

"I dont feel there was too much tension.

"I was overhitting it and trying to go for too much because she was getting a tremendous amount of balls back."

  10. 'This match the easiest'published at 15:49 British Summer Time 13 July 2019

    Williams 2-6 2-6 Halep

Simona Halep's coach Daniel Dobre: "She played very well this year - in Miami, in Roland Garros and Eastbourne - and this week she found everything so she won.

"I started working with her more in 2013 and was with her in 2014 when she beat Serena, it is a long collaboration, but for sure these last four months have been the best.

On the improvement on the mental side of her game: "Most of that is down to her. She is very independent and knows what she wants. She has showed in the past that she can be very good on grass. On paper this match was the easiest because she just played so well."
