    Williams 1-4 Halep*

Williams is certainly getting vocal. A lovely drop shot at the net to go 15-0 up.

Halep replies with an even more lovely cross-court winner. Even Williams applauded that one.

At 30-30, the net again stops Williams in her tracks, but she brings it back to deuce.

A forehand winner down the line. Williams advantage.

    Break point.

Serena may be thinking a bit of what happened in the past at the US Open. She took a break from tennis. All these emotional things have an influence when you are on a big stage. Sometimes it can be a bit of an overwhelming experience.

Simona is playing incredibly well but Serena is capable of turning this around if Simona drops her level a little bit.

This just shows that no matter how great you are, how many titles you've won, how many finals you've played - nerves can get in the way.

Serena has been pretty wound up so far. But she's been here many times before.

Finally, Williams has a game on the board. Huge cheers as she holds to love.

Big smiles from close friend the Duchess of Sussex in the Royal Box.

Time for a change of ends and perhaps a time for Williams to regroup her thoughts.

Jen Ann: Simona Halep is on fire.

Christoper O Ruairc: Unless Serena becomes more dynamic with her footwork, especially on the second ball, this match could get away from her, quickly very like last year. This is kind of shocking, even with the stakes /records etc.

    Owen: Um...

Vicks: Serena, what the hell’s happening?!

Patrick McNally: Serena looks slow, positioning is off, nothing is right in her game at the moment. Halep is taking advantage of that and is playing some great tennis.

Can Halep keep this up? This is the best couple of returning games I've seen her play.

A great, great start. A dream start.

Some of these shots from Simona Halep are....wow. I can't think of a more appropriate adjective.

Is Serena Williams still in the dressing room? Another skewed shot before Halep holds with an ace.

It's kind of taken my breath away, to be honest. I didn't expect this to happen. The problems for Serena are so evident in her breathing, the way she is hitting the ball and how it's coming off the strings - she will be panicking right now.

Well, well, well... a lot of stunned exchanges among the Centre Court crowd at the changeover.

The “come on Serena”s just about outnumber the “come on Simona’s” but it is very close.

Is there anyone quicker in the women's game than Simona Halep?

This wasn't in the script. What a start from the Romanian.

Oh wow, Simona Halep. She levels at 15-15 with a SUBLIME cross-court winner off the backhand. That was stunning.

"C'MON" Serena shouts as she brings it up to 30-30, before skewing a backhand far, far too long.

Halep goes a double break up with a fine backhand down the line. This is getting interesting.

Her serves have been quite wayward, which is another sign of nerves for Serena. One of Halep's greatest abilities is to chase down the ball. She couldn't be more inspired right now.

There's no doubt that Serena Williams is the best women's player there's ever been.

But she wants to makes sure.

Her serve is one of the greatest shots in the game. She's one of the best we've ever had - man or woman.

It's an incredibly tough ask for Simona Halep today.

Laughter in the seats in front of the BBC Sport commentary box as a Romanian fan bursts into song.

Waving a Romanian scarf from the 2015 Rugby World Cup, he loudly goes through a couple of verses before several choruses of “We love you Simona, we do!”

A huge round of applause greets the final note, the confident fella asking everyone to join him by backing Halep.
