Ooosh. A great rally sees Williams send the ball flying high, high above Centre Court. It lands on the T and she volleys home the point.

This set is still going with the serve. Williams needs to do something special if she is to take a hold of this second set.

    John McEnroe
Three-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

Serena is hitting the ball a lot harder off the ground and she's using the serve effectively out wide now. Some good adjustments to get herself back in to this match.

Serena Williams has become a better thinker out there and at her age is able to make adjustments much more quickly now.

You feel there has been a shift out there. Simona Halep must keep bringing it or Williams will be back in this quickly.

The whole energy that Simona Halep has brought to the court is of a player who now believes that they can win this title.

The first point is replayed as a Halep shot is called out, but Hawk Eye rules it in.

They must have watered the grass a lot overnight because both players have slipped within a matter of minutes.

    Williams holds to love.

Amy: Jaw dropping defence, but more importantly court coverage from Simona Halep. Serena is blasting winners but Simona somehow finds a way to return them. Amazing

Jamie Scott: Serena must be wondering how she has drawn a human wall in the Wimbledon final for the second straight year.

Ben: Just keep close to Serena in this set... Serena will get tired.

    Williams* 2-6 1-1 Halep

Williams takes a moment just to compose herself after sending a shot just shy of the corner at 30-30. She then sends the next point wide as Halep holds.

The American is looking better though. And Halep knows she's under more pressure.

This is going to be very difficult for Simona Halep to put to one side this intimidating character that is emerging at the other side of the net.

Michael Powell: Serena is really feeling the pressure of equalling the grand slam record, there's no question about it.

Margie: This match is gonna be over really fast. Halep way too good and way too many mistakes from Serena.

David E: Come on Serena! It’s only one set down. Win the second set and go for the third. You’re a serial winner and I trust you can turn this around.

    Williams* 2-6 0-0 Halep

I hope the grass is ok.

I think Serena Williams might have just hurt its feelings with an almighty roar in its direction as she levels at 15-15 in the first game of this set.

  12. 'I have no doubt Serena will come back'published at 14:37 British Summer Time 13 July 2019

    *Williams 2-6 0-0 Halep

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you saw Halep smiling outside the locker room before the start of play, she looked relaxed and ready. And that is how it has proved.

Williams looked tense. She carries a bit of emotional baggage into big matches - we lost here against Angelique Kerber last year and was upset by Roberta Vinci in the 2015 US Open semi-finals when she was closing in on a Serena Slam. I have no doubt that she will come back into this match though

Right, Serena Williams. How do you respond to that?

A reminder...the last six women's singles finals at Wimbledon have been won in two sets.

    Williams 2-6 0-0 Halep

    New balls please.

Crikey jim Simona Halep is on fire. Williams looks set for a winner but Halep stretches out and gets a backhand over the net, only for her opponent to slam it into the net from close range.

Set point. Not this time. The point goes Williams' way.

Second set point. Halep's got it in 26 minutes.

Three times now Williams has turned away from the court after a point and looked like she is trying to get herself in the right place mentally.

It just doesn’t seem to be working.

Not this time. She sends her shot flying wide, and then can't meet a huge Halep serve. Advantage Halep.

Stunning. Williams is left unable to move as Halep fires a winner past her.

Tolga Akdeniz: Halep on absolute fire here. What a start. Keeping the ball deep and forcing Serena on the back foot.
