And we're back on level terms. Nadal breaks back.

    As you were.

    *Medvedev 2-1 Nadal

Good court positioning from Nadal to take a 30-0 lead on Medvedev's serve before another mis-hit. He just doesn't seem to be getting a good connection with the ball at the moment.

He goes long on the next point but brings up 40-30 by simply wearing Medvedev out and he can only flop a backhand into the net.

    Nadal break point.

Mumbles of surprise from the pro-Nadal crowd as their man coughs up the first break point.

No expression from Medvedev, who is determined to let his tennis do the talking after his antics earlier in the tournament.

The average rally length at the moment is about nine shots. Strap in ladies and gents, I think we're in for the long haul.

Medvedev looks very comfortable indeed in a Grand Slam final.

Brilliant point from both players and that really is our first show of toe-to-toe battling and Nadal had more power.

Lovely, lovely play on the first point. With both way behind the baseline, Nadal goes for the drop shot, Medvedev makes it but plays a dropshot himself, and this time it's Nadal who has to sprint for the net. He makes it but the Russian gets the point.

Nadal levels with an overhead volley and then gets the next point as Medvedev nets after a 17-shot rally.

Medvedev wrong-foots Nadal to level at 30-30.

Medvedev races into a 40-15 lead on his first service game before Rafa pulls a point back.

The Russian holds as Nadal fails to clear the net with a shaky forehand.

Rafa knows what he's doing. The Spaniard shrugs his shoulders and shakes his head like a naughty school-kid told off for chewing gum.

But it helps him. Nadal can take as long as he wants on the serve after the violation and slowly, and pointedly, takes an age to bounce the ball before delivering.

Nadal is still shaking his head as approaches his chair at the changeover, though. Again taking his time, lining up those bottles, under the watchful eye of the chair umpire.

Good game from Medvedev. We know how good his cross-court forehand is. Rafa will be well-advised not to get into those cross-court rallies.

  15. Nadal handed code violationpublished at 21:25 British Summer Time 8 September 2019

    *Medvedev 0-1 Nadal

Nadal has just been handed a code violation for slow play. That's very early but this chair umpire is stamping his authority.

He saves the break point and then gets the advantage as Medvedev skews a forehand wide. He holds as Medvedev slams one into the net.

    Medvedev 0-0 Nadal*

Medvedev plants a backhand wide before Nadal brings up 30-0 with an astounding forehand winner which goes around the post and lands perfectly on the inner tramline.

A couple of early errors though as he double faults on his next serve and then goes wide on the next two points.

    Break point Medvedev.

Medvedev has defended 58 break points in this tournament, Nadal only 16, which means Nadal is serving a lot better than we have all expected him to.

I think it becomes mightily, mightily difficult for Medvedev is he goes behind in the first set.

If Nadal can get on top very early then it's going to be difficult for the Russian, but confidence - it works wonders.
