Amy: It’s astonishing that Medvedev is getting to some of these balls and that Nadal is missing some of these easy put aways. A lot of these points only Djokovic would have a chance of staying in.

I just get the feeling that everyone in New York wants Nadal to sweat a little bit.

How are you going to reply to that, Rafa?

Nadal tries to tire Medvedev out in the opening point of the game, but sends a forehand wide as he tried to find an opening.

Medvedev slams down an ace for the next point and then another sublime drop shot for 40-0.

He's suddenly found a second wind! Another ace to secure the love hold. Crikey.

Absolute every ounce of strength Medvedev had in his body he put into that shot, and he put it into the net. It was waste of energy., but he was going to give that absolutely everything he had.

Nadal wants this wrapped up in straight sets, if he can.

He races to 30-0 and then Medvedev fluffs a backhand drop shot into the net.

Love hold as the Russian then nets a forehand.

Rafa Nadal doesn't look too flustered.

Not long ago he looked to be soon serving for the title. Now he's looking to stay in the set...

This time it's Medvedev who gets the advantage and he doesn't need asking twice.

An overhead volley ends an outstanding game and an outstanding performance from the Russian.

Don't rule him out just yet...

My oh my oh my oh my.

    This is just astonishing tennis.

Nadal messes it up after a 17-shot rally in which the ball was flying here there and everywhere. Medevedev skies a return and all Nadal has to do is get it over the line, but he slams it into the net!

Not this time, Rafa. Medvedev smashes down an overhead rally. To deuce we go.

But it's advantage and break point again for Nadal, Medvedev not able to deal with the ferocious pace of a forehand return.

Medvedev fights back to 30-30, including another serve-and-volley straight off the practice courts.

The crowd approve, they don't want this to be over yet.

And they are utterly entertained on the next point. Unbelievable play from the Russian in a remarkable rally, but it doesn't go his way as he nets a forehand while sprinting towards the net.

    Nadal break point.

On his serve, Medvedev quickly goes 30-0 down, massively overswinging on the latter point on what was probably the easiest volley he's had all day.

Not one he'll want to watch back.

A slice-filled rally ends as Nadal comes into the net, taking the pace off the ball with a delicious backhand drop volley that Medvedev can't reach on the first point of the Spaniard's serve.

He sends a forehand down the line for the second before Medvedev nets a backhand and then skews a return.

    Love hold Nadal.
