  1. 'Evans trying to stay with Moutet's pace'published at 21:38 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans doesn't seem quite settled.

It's difficult when someone plays that 'fast and furious' approach not to get caught up in it. Evans does play at a fast pace, but on his own terms.

    *Evans 1-3 Moutet

Evo looks lean and fit, helped by working with Tim Henman's former fitness coach Kieron Vorster during lockdown. No doubt inspired by Tim telling him that he needed to lose a few pounds in Australia earlier this year...

Looks like Evo will need every bit of that fitness today... 21-year-old Moutet looks sharp. The Frenchman whacks another forehand winner - Rafa-esque - to keep his nose in front.

    Evans 1-2 Moutet*

How much higher can Dan Evans go in the rankings?

Jim Courier, much more qualified than I, reckons he can get into the top 20.

"He's different to most players we see out and there is a value to that," the four-time Grand Slam champion says on Amazon Prime.

"He'a almost Fed-light. He has a lot of court craft and guile, and one of the best sliced backhand slices."

    Evans 1-2 Moutet*

Phew, Dan Evans is on the board. The 23rd seed settles down on his second service game, sealing the hold with a hefty first serve which Moutet can only bat back over the baseline.

    *Evans 0-2 Moutet

Evans is not finding his range yet. A stray forehand out wide goes, well, too wide and leaves Moutet a point away from a straightforward hold.

After a brief baseline tussle, the Frenchman becomes impatient and an aggressive cross-court return flies wide... 40-30.

But any hopes Evo might have an instant reply is shut down quickly with an ace down the middle. Licked the paint.

  6. 'Moutet is a talent'published at 21:30 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Naomi Cavaday
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

Over five sets, Evans will be more solid and more consistent.

Moutet is a talent and people have been talking about what he can achieve.

  7. Moutet breakspublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans 0-1 Moutet*

Evans saves one... but not the second. The British number one dumps a forehand from the back of the court into the net.

Not an ideal start for the Brit...

  8. Break points Moutetpublished at 21:25 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    *Evans 0-0 Moutet

Woah. Moutet cracks a missile of a forehand winner - 91mph to be exact - and that gives him two break points...

  9. Postpublished at 21:23 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    *Evans 0-0 Moutet

Evans starts slowly, trailing 0-30 before unleashing that single-handed backhand to grind his side of scoreboard into action. Vintage.

Moutet is dressed more like a nu-rave DJ today, though. Garish neon yellow splatted everywhere.

    Evans to kick us off.

Obviously Moutet is in the bubble. Otherwise I'm sure he would be heading up to the Bronx - the birth of hip-hop - to spit out some verses with the locals.

Or he might have preferred popping to Steinway and Sons on Fifth Av - a la Novak - for a tinkle on the ivories. Moutet is also an accomplished piano player. Multi-talented.

    Evans v Moutet

What do we know about Dan Evans' opponent?

He's French. He's ranked 77th. He's never won in the US Open main draw.

    Oh, and he's a rapper...

    Evans v Moutet

Brummie boy Evans showed why he is the country's best men's player with victory in the inaugural Battle of the Brits post-lockdown, then his tour comeback began with a brilliant win against Russian world number 14 Andrey Rublev at the 'Cincy' event.

The next round saw him blown off court by big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic, but he returned to winning ways in the US Open first round against Brazilian youngster Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Never mind Sir Andy, Dan Evans is the current British number one (even though he always acknowledges Murray is still the country's top dog).

Evo is seeded here at Flushing Meadows after a blistering start to 2020 where he won 11 of his 16 matches, putting him 11th in the ATP Race to London before the pandemic struck and elevated him to the world's top 30.

Saj has raced away from his desk quicker than Konta has legged it off court.

Sterling effort, Mr Chowdhury. Get yourself an ice bath.

One Brit down (and out), two to go in the singles today.

    Next up...

It was a tremendous performance from Cirstea. You talk about the match-ups and the tactics, and Konta's more experience, and the likelihood is Konta comes out on top. But there is always a chance, your opponent plays at a top-20/25 level and kept it up for the whole three sets.

Is that expected? No. Is it possible? Yes.

Konta played a solid match but Cirstea was great and Konta couldn't stay with her.
