He dug out that previous service game, but in that last game he was full of clarity.

Evans seems to be getting back on track. He got a little swept up in it at first, but now he looks like he knows how to beat this guy.

No! Evans channels his frustrations positively and breaks back. Back on serve.

Right then, has Moutet got the minerals to back up the chat and close this one out? Into the business end of the opening set now...

Unfortunately, an earlier typo made it sound like Evans was within a beer of the game. Ooops. No slight intended...

I'd certainly need a pint if I was being put through these exertions. Evans finally gets over the line to hold when Moutet knocks a backhand into the net.

Evans has been pushed to the absolute limit by this guy.

He's having to strain every sinew and be innovative.

At 4-3 to Moutet, the fact that Evans is even in this set is a good sign, because his opponent has been much better.

Deuce Part Deux. Moutet brings a baseline duel to a close with a killer drop-shot.

Evans picks himself up though with a deft volley, that was a tough one to execute. Excellent.

Again, he can't clinch the game... this time Moutet has a huge slice of luck. The net cord takes a massive chunk of his ball and drops over the net.

More like it, Dan! Evans pummels a forehand winner to move within a point of the game. Can he see it out?

This is a bit of a slow start for Evans. He played good stuff at the Western and Southern then at the start of this tournament.

Easy as one, two... three? Evans thinks so after a service winner out wide. Moutet isn't so sure. He asks the umpire for another look. Does Moutet have better judgement than the electronic line-calling system? Nope. Deuce.

Then he rattles Moutet with a 120mph second serve... two saved.

What does Evans do when he's in a spot of bother.. serve and volley. One saved.

Uh oh. Evans is not locked in yet. He puts a simple forehand into the net for 0-30 and then, with Moutet scrambling gamely, sticks a pick-up there too.

Three break points for Moutet...

Evans is chatting again at his box... I think you know what that means. Moutet holds after Evans sprays another forehand return.

Moutet has Evans in trouble at A-40, only to get a volley all wrong and is punished again by a passing winner.

Undeterred, Moutet ventures forward again to move a point away but can't close out and we're back to a third deuce...

Uh oh. Dan is chuntering already. He has a pop at his box - "Why tell me to go there? It's in my head!" - after spraying a forehand wide on the ad side. Then he swipes his racquet at the chair. That's 30-15...

Moutet lets him off the hook with a double fault but takes control again when an off-balance Evans goes into the net from the back of the court.

But we're back level when Evo pounces forward to meet a drop-shot, whacking away the winner... deuce.

Evans can be quite a disrupter - if you go off your game then he can suck all the energy out with his backhand slice.

At the back of the court his baseline game has improved lots.

I had a chat with him at the Battle of the Brits and he said he had watched Andy Murray practice He's interested in tactics and trying to work out his opponents' vulnerabilities.

Better, Dan, better. He holds to 15, although the game is sealed when Moutet bats a second serve into the net with that forehand.

Evo puffs out his cheeks as he goes for a sip of water. More out relief than anything else.
