    Evans 6-4 3-4 Moutet*

Moutet has got serious wheels, but even he can't scamper back to reach a forehand from Evans which whizzes to the back of the court.

Neither can Moutet reach a drop-shot after Evans drags him out east... 30-0.

A weak backhand from Outet into the net, in conjunction with a walloping forehand from Evans, see the British number one home.

    *Evans 6-4 2-4 Moutet

Moutet holds serve after pinning Evans back behind the baseline with some deep returning.

Deja vu. The Frenchman leads 4-2, like he did in the first set...

  3. 'The umpire seems nonplussed about the rants'published at 22:46 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    David Law
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

Moutet had a rant earlier, and now Evans is having his own rant - he's doing it in the direction of his support team at the other end of the court.

The umpire looks like she couldn't care less about it all.

If we think Andy Murray is making a seriously impressive Grand Slam comeback, how about Tsvetana Pironkova?

The 32-year-old Bulgarian is playing her first tournament since Wimbledon 2017 and has today knocked out this year's Australian Open finalist, Garbine Muguruza.

    Pironkova, a Wimbledon semi-finalist way back in 2010, won 7-5 6-3.

She has given birth to her first child during her time away from tour.

You can read a bit more on that and a win for Aussie Open champ Sofia Kenin here.

  5. Moutet breakspublished at 22:45 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans 6-4 2-3 Moutet*

Not a good game from Evans. Now he is the one ranting at someone, anyone. Probably his coach Mark Hilton who is getting an ear-bashing.

The British number one pushes a forehand wide on the second break point. Moutet in command.

  6. Postpublished at 22:43 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    *Evans 6-4 2-2 Moutet

Another 'Allez!' from Evans as he starts the game with a kick-serve that Moutet can only bat into the net.

Sacre bleu! That positivity doesn't last long... Evans loses his way and the Frenchman has two break points.

    *Evans 6-4 2-2 Moutet

Better from Moutet as he keeps schtum for now.

A wonderful points sees him clinch the hold with Evo pushing him all the way, a lob leaving the Brit scrambling and then crunching a forehand winner past him for the hold.

    Evans 6-4 2-1 Moutet*

We talked earlier about wanting a bit of needle... we’ve got it here.

Evans is never shy of saying what he thinks, even if it rubs his opponent up the wrong way.

And he does that on his way to a hold, giving himself an ‘Allez!’ after winning a point.

    A post-tennis career in Anglo-French diplomacy doesn’t await Evans, I don’t think.

  9. 'Moutet needs to channel that ability'published at 22:37 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Naomi Cavaday
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

With Moutet it's so easy to say 'discipline, discipline, discipline' and rein it in. But it's about channelling what he has.

Rather than take away the flair and talent, it's about adding that execution on the big points.

  10. Murray and Skupski win openerpublished at 22:35 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Murray/Skupski 6-3 7-5 Dodig/Polasek

You want it, I've got it... Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski have won their opening match in the men's dubs.

The lads are aiming to go even further than last year's jaunt to the semi-finals and start with a 6-3 7-5 win over fourth seeds Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek.

Meanwhile, fellow Brit Dom Inglot and his Pakistani partner Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi won the first set of their doubles match against American duo Jack Sock and Jackson Withrow after a tie-break. They are 4-4 in the second set.

  12. Postpublished at 22:31 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    *Evans 6-4 1-1 Moutet

Fair play to the Frenchman, he's cooled off enough to get over the line and level.

Moutet still mutters to himself as he goes to the baseline for a towel down. His coach nervously looks the other way...

    Evans 6-4 1-0 Moutet*

For once, Evans is the quiet one on court. And it is working in his favour.

After the British number one holds to start the second set positively, Moutet continues to rant and rave. I reckon his racquet is nearing the end of its life.

Uh oh... is that it? No, the racquet remarkably survives a double fault which brings deuce.

  14. What's happening elsewhere?published at 22:25 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Dominic ThiemImage source, EPA

Dominic Thiem, who is second seed in the absence of Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, has rumbled nicely through his second-round match.

The Austrian won 6-3 6-3 6-2 against India's Sumit Nagal, although he did have a strop over not being able to have a swig of his favourite energy drink (which hails from the same country and could give him wings, possibly) from the can.

A US Open official covered it with a towel, like a parent shielding their child at the beach, to avoid the logo being seen.

Elsewhere, there has been a surprise with Vasek Pospisil seeing off fellow Canadian Milos Raonic in four sets.

Russians Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov, seeded 10th and 11th respectively, are also through, as is 2014 champion Marin Cilic, sixth seed Matteo Berrettini and eighth seed Roberto Bautista Agut.

Grigor Dimitrov is one set all with Hungary's Marton Fucsovics.

While Corentin Moutet stills rants and raves... let's catch up with what else is happening at Flushing Meadows.

  16. Game and first set Evanspublished at 22:24 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans 6-4 Moutet

And there lies the difference. Evans didn’t let his frustrations boil over...Moutet did. The Frenchman whacks a forehand long and that’s the opening set to Evans.

  17. Postpublished at 22:22 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans 5-4 Moutet*

Corentin Moutet is, erm, pretty combustible, shall we say. He’s lost the plot here.

He starts ranting at the chair umpire because he feels Evans is moving when he is serving, then his mood gets darker when he is given a violation for racquet abuse as the Brit earns another set point...

  18. 'Evans was allowed to move forward for Moutet's serve'published at 22:21 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Naomi Cavaday
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

I feel like Moutet needs to have a refresher of the rules, after aggressively throwing his racquet.

He's still complaining to the umpire about Evans moving up the court than for previous returns for that one point - you're supposed to move around and distract your opponent.

  19. Set point to Evanspublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans 5-4 Moutet*

    "COME ONNNN!"

Dan Evans' roared reaction tells you everything you need to know.

The British number one stretches and slides forward to pick up near the net and Moutet can't return... set point!

  20. Postpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 3 September 2020

    Evans 5-4 Moutet*

Again, Evans pounces onto the front foot to meet a short ball - great speed - and then goes all Air Jordan to put away a high backhand volley.

    Deuce...
