    Federer 6-4 3-2 Mannarino*

A cannon of a serve just when Roger Federer needed it most. He fends off a second break point and then edges ahead before firing down an ace to hold. Relief in the Swiss player's camp.

There's just not many safe zones for Federer. Mannarino is not afraid to really flatten the ball out - get that ball driving through the court.

That's brilliant. A nonchalantly slapped forehand winner that flirts with the chalk. And another break point chance for Adrian Mannarino...

    *Federer 6-4 2-2 Mannarino

First serve into the tape for Roger Federer, the second is good but Adrian Mannarino engages the Swiss and looks to push him deep, but that's too deep... and drifts long off his backhand. He challenges, but to no avail. Federer saves the break. Deuce.

Oooh. The whole Centre Court crowd knew what Roger Federer was lining up there, but he just couldn't execute it - a forehand slice that comes up short and now Adrian Mannarino has break point.

    Huge moment!

I think Federer's backhand is his most improved shot through his career, I think that's come from dealing with the effects of Nadal's left-handed forehand coming into his backhand side.

    *Federer 6-4 2-2 Mannarino

Good service game from Adrian Mannarino, he'll happily tick those off to put the pressure back on Roger Federer. The Swiss does have a look at a backhand winner at 40-0, but drags it into the tramlines and it's a hold to love for the Frenchman.

    Federer 6-4 2-1 Mannarino*

Adrian Mannarino leaks a slice into the tramlines but Roger Federer does the same with a loose forehand. The next backhand is a little more like the Swiss' old self, kissing the chalk.

It's a battle to get over the line, though, but Federer does and this second set remains on serve.

  9. Andreescu and Azarenka matches among those cancelled for todaypublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

A total of 14 matches have been cancelled after more rain at Wimbledon today.

Among them, Britain's Samantha Murray Sharan, due to play Romanian Sorana Cirstea, and Emma Raducanu, who should have been facing Russia's Vitalia Diatchenko, will have to wait for their opening round games.

Women's fifth seed Bianca Andreescu's match against France's Alize Cornet and 12th seed Victoria Azarenka's meeting with Kateryna Kozlova have also been moved back to Wednesday.

In the men's draw, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sam Querrey and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are forced to wait for their first games too.

That's the one! When the left-hander gets a look on the forehand side, he often makes it count. Another "pick that out" winner and Federer then hooks one of his own wide. Mannarino holds.

    Federer 6-4 1-0 Mannarino*

Mannarino clutches his forehead with two fingers, wondering how he hasn't seen this game out, he challenges but more in hope than expectation and that's deuce.

In years gone by this where Federer has got the first set under his belt, then run away with matches. It’s important for Mannarino to try and dig his heels in here...

Brilliant from the Frenchman, winding up a forehand and stinging it down the line to leave Roger Federer no chance. He backs it up with a leaping first serve that kicks wide, but Federer has his number on the next with a deep slice return. 40-30.

Oooh. Looked set to be a hold to love for the Swiss but then he clunks a forehand into the media seats - watch your head, Jonathan Jurejko - the 39-year-old is human after all. It's a brief lapse in concentration as he continues on to hold.

Thoughts have been already wandering towards Middle Sunday, although the forecast looks better tomorrow and Thursday. Maybe I’m panicking too early.

To help get through the early rounds, the All England Club says all men’s doubles matches in the opening two rounds will be played over three sets instead of five.

  17. 'As Brits, we could be a bit more positive with the wins'published at 16:47 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

Dan Evans has been wondering if Britons focus too much on defeats and not enough on wins.

"I just think we have a great - it's a tough way to put it, but we enjoy putting up a valiant effort, not celebrating it, but we put it right out there," the British number one said after his victory over Feliciano Lopez.

"You guys as well [media] like to deliver the losses pretty front-page sort of stuff. I just think British mentality is that at the minute.

"I'm not sure if there was too much about Liam Broady winning [on Monday]. There was a lot about Heather's [Watson] heartache, stuff like that.

"I'm not saying you guys are negative. I'm just saying as Brits, we could be a bit more positive with the wins."

    Is he right? #bbctennis

Vintage Federer to finish the opening set. Nothing guaranteed to wow a Wimbledon crowd more than a Swiss-style single backhand. Beautiful.

  19. Game and first set - Federerpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    Federer 6-4 Mannarino

Adrian Mannarino fends off the first but allows Roger Federer into the point on the second and the end is inevitable - a short slice and passing backhand winner combo from the 20-time Grand Slam champ and he takes the opening set.

  20. Set points Federerpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    Federer 5-4 Mannarino*

That's delightful. The classiest of backhand winners down the line from Roger Federer, incredibly smooth... he dances around the next on to the forehand side and forces Adrian Mannarino long.

And then a perfectly constructed point! Drawing the Frenchman in before picking him off at the net with a simple forehand.

    Two set points.
