Ashleigh Barty feels privileged to step into Simona Halep’s shoes and open Centre Court proceedings at Wimbledon on Tuesday.

That role is traditionally reserved for the defending women’s champion but Halep was forced to withdraw with an ongoing calf problem on Friday, meaning the honour was passed to world number one Barty, who takes on Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro.

Barty said: “It’s incredibly special. It’s an opportunity very few people get to experience. Of course, I wish Sim was here to be able to experience that. She’s earned the right to open Centre Court on Tuesday as the defending women’s champion.

“I’m extremely excited and humbled to have the privilege and to have the honour."

    Buzarnescu* 5-7 6-4 0-3 Williams

That could be the decisive breakthrough for Venus Williams.

The American survived a break point in her opening service game of the third set before taking her first opportunity on Mihaela Buzarnescu's serve for a 2-0 lead.

Can she consolidate her advantage? She can! Williams lets out a big 'come on' as she holds for 3-0.

  3. 'I let go and really got rolling'published at 13:14 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 7-5 Lopez

A few words from the winner? Go on then...

Here is Dan Evans: "It was great, thanks to everybody for coming out, amazing to be back playing at Wimbledon. It was great to be back and I didn't realise it would be as busy.

"Delighted to win, I played some good tennis, I am happy with how I came through.

"For the last two sets I enjoyed it, the first I was a bit too into myself and when I let go I really got rolling. At the end I was patient, scraped the last game and that was a good mental effort today.

"I am working to get to that place with my game, not give away any days, work on my game and it's been working well."

How will you spend this afternoon? "Hopefully watching England win!"

Creaking? Nonsense from this live text commentator, the Spaniard's serve and volley game is as on point as his headband.

But hang on... he cups wide on the forehand and now Dan Evans has a first match point!

What a great reach from Lopez. There's a little fist pump from him there too. He's doing everything to stay in this. What a drop volley from Lopez!

Oooh. Feliciano Lopez is creaking, he scuttles into the net but can't pick up a dipping Dan Evans backhand and that's 0-30. The Spaniard opts for the same approach off the next serve and converts, and again... this time Evans goes for the lob, can Lopez reach it?! Just about! And Evans can't get to the bouncing ball quick enough. 30-30.

Ace. That's the way to dust off a double, and from there Feliciano Lopez holds.

Right then, Dan Evans is one game away from the second round... Feliciano Lopez is serving to stay in the championships.

The British number one whips a forehand beyond his Spanish opponent at the net to make it 15-15 but Lopez fights back with a lunging volley before double faulting. 30-30.

  12. Williams and Buzarnescu go to a thirdpublished at 13:01 British Summer Time 29 June 2021

    Buzarnescu 5-7 6-4 0-0 Williams

And we do indeed have a third set to come on court three, as Venus Williams and Mihaela Buzarnescu battle for a place in the second round.

Williams was unable to respond after Buzarnescu broke her serve in the opening game of the second set, holding out to take it 6-4.

    Evans 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 5-4 Lopez*

Feliciano Lopez is at his nonchalant best - and worst - as he casually knifes a string of backhands around the court before opting for a short option and undercooking it by some distance.

Lopez challenges an Evans ace off the next but Hawk Eye shows it just nibbled the line, just! The British number one follows up with another that there can be no questioning. A hold to love.

Double trouble for Feliciano Lopez, whose serve had been looking snappy before giving that point away, but the Spaniard responds with a remarkable, slapped forehand from the baseline that somehow beats Dan Evans on the angle.

Anything you can do... Lopez skips a drop shot over the tape but Evans sprints on to it and flicks an outrageous effort of his own past the 39-year-old. It's not enough, Lopez holds.

    John Inverdale

That was a Lopez of old for a couple of points there, but there seems to be a problem with a thigh or quad - there's something wrong there.

But if he gets a sniff of a chance though...?

That's the kind of rally we were expecting to be ten a penny in this match, but we've had very few of them.
