  2. 'A good match-up for Dan'published at 17:10 British Summer Time 1 September 2021

Dan Evans looks like a man on a mission today, especially after the dramas of the other day.

He is very business-like so far. He is strutting from side to side, almost ran to change ends and looks like he wants to get this done quickly.

I think this is a good match-up for Dan.

    Evans 2-0 Giron*

Textbook stuff from Dan Evans at the moment, he seems to have the measure of Marcos Giron as he races to 40-0 on serve before the American takes a more aggressive approach, scuttling to the net to win the point with a volley.

It's a minor blemish on the British number one's card, wrapping up the hold with a fierce forehand winner to consolidate his opening break.

    *Evans 1-0 Giron

Giron saves the first of those with a snappy serve but Evans comes dashing to the net off the next and slaps away a forehand volley from shoulder height to take an important early break.

    He's off to a flyer!

Dan Evans gets the first points on the board as his opponent drills one into the tape, before the British number one picks off Marcos Giron with a sublime one-handed backhand down the line.

Superb. 0-40 and three early break points.

    Evans v Giron

Dan Evans is looking to reach the third round for the fourth time in New York, last doing so two years ago.

The British number one has faced today's opponent Marcos Giron on one previous occasion, beating him in straight sets at Melbourne 2 earlier this year.

The world number 27 should be favourite to go through against the 28-year-old home hopeful, who is currently ranked 64th and turned pro eight years after Evans in 2014.

Dan Evans' opponent Marcos Giron came through in straight sets against Frenchman Antoine Hoang in the opening round.

This is the second time the 28-year-old has reached the second round at the US Open, also doing so last year.

The world number 64 did enjoy his best-ever Grand Slam run at the French Open earlier this year, reaching the third round.

British number one Dan Evans had to battle the hot conditions and the lasting effects of Covid-19 to win his opening match of the US Open.

He saw off Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-1, having arrived in New York on the back of four defeats in his five matches since Wimbledon.

The 31-year-old also missed the Olympic Games in Tokyo after contracting coronavirus and said the heat at Flushing Meadows took its toll.

“It wasn’t easy. I felt pretty bad and I just hung in there really,” he said. “I was playing better than I had been, but physically I wasn’t feeling great. I had a pretty bad headache, that’s something that I’ve never had before.

“I think the lack of matches in my legs played a big part and made me feel tired, at least that’s what I hope it is. Usually I enjoy playing in hot and humid conditions and I feel that I am pretty good in those conditions.

“I don’t know if it is because I haven’t played a lot and I am not very fit at the minute or if it is the lasting effects. I got through and did a good job and I would probably say I was the better player.”

This one is getting under way almost an hour later than planned because of rain in New York and we remain on weather watch this afternoon as the tail end of Tropical Depression Ida - as it's been downgraded to from a hurricane - wags in the direction of Flushing Meadows.

The outside courts have been dried and hopefully the rain has now passed - there is a flash flood warning for large parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, however.
