In the women's draw, world number one Ash Barty laid down a marker with a 44-minute 6-0 6-0 win over Danka Kovinic.

The match was Barty's first at Grand Slam in over a year - not that you would have realised.

It was a different story for defending champion Sofia Kenin, who was reduced to tears in a nervy opening round win against Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis.

Garbine Muguruza and Coco Gauff advanced, but Victoria Azarenka fell in straight sets after appearing to struggle with her breathing.

Rafael Nadal came through his first match of the season unscathed with a straight-set win over Laslo Djere.

The world number two missed the ATP Cup with a stiff back but he moved well in his 6-3 6-4 6-1 win over Djere.

There were also wins for Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev on the second day at Melbourne Park.

But 13th seed David Goffin was stunned in five sets by Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin, in a victory that saw Popyrin save four match points.

Cameron Norrie was the winner in the all-British first-round encounter in the men's draw.

He came past British number one Dan Evans in four sets to set up a meeting with either Ilya Ivashka or Roman Safiullin.

Jo Konta's retirement leaves Heather Watson as the last woman standing in terms of British interest in the singles draw.

She'll face Anett Kontaveit in the second round on Thursday.

Former British number one on Tennis Breakfast

I can't actually believe what's going on. When she went off the court we weren't sure what the problem was but when she won the first set I thought it was business as usual. But she did have more medical treatment, appeared to have stomach taped and her hip flexor treated. I thought she would battle through it.

This must be serious because we don't see Johanna Konta retire. She will be absolutely gutted. I think she's crying into her towel.

That's a real shame for the British number one, but she clearly felt something as she served for the first set, and it wasn't getting any better.

Konta heads off with her face buried in her towel.

    Breaking

    Juvan 4-6 2-0 Konta

And that, I'm afraid, is that.

Whatever the problem, which seemed to be with Johanna Konta's hip and lower left abdomen, it was impacting her serve and her movement. She touches racquets with Kaja Javan before heading off court.

    And her second!

Ouch. Johanna Konta starts her service game with a double fault.

It doesn't get any better from there for Konta, who sends a volley long before a second double fault hands Kaja Juvan three break points.

Some deep hitting from Jo Konta, but Kaja Javan paints the tramlines either side of her to move to a 30-0 lead.

The Slovenian holds to love as Konta pushes a return over the baseline.

Konta has also had some tape applied to her lower abdomen.

It'll be Kaja Juvan to serve and get the second set going.
