    *Osaka 6-2 2-2 Garcia

Caroline Garcia gets a round of applause from her father and coach, Louis Paul, as a move to the net forces Naomi Osaka to rush a backhand into the net.

This is better from Garcia, smacking down an ace, and she holds to love with another good first serve.

    Osaka 6-2 1-0 Garcia*

Again, Osaka is dictating the rallies, and she finishes the latest one off with an absoluely glorious backhand that spins and fizzes up the line for 15-15.

There's a look of frustration from Garcia as she misses her first serve and she drags herself to deuce with some wayward errors. Hmm.

  5. Kyrgios entertaining the home crowdpublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Kyrgios 2-2 Humbert*

Nick Kyrgios loves the John Cain Arena - Melbourne Park's newly-renamed third showcourt. And he's back on it now.

In normal circumstances, the court is open to grounds passholders and usually makes for a boisterous atmosphere. You may remember it was where Kyrgios beat Russia's Karen Khachanov in a stone-cold classic last year. Popcorn everywhere.

Anyway... not as much drama yet as the Australian takes on France's Ugo Humbert in front of a healthy crowd. Hang on, he's just thrown in an underarm serve and then breaks out into a cheeky grin after putting away a winner.

    It's warming up...

    Osaka 6-2 1-0 Garcia*

Naomi Osaka picks up exactly where she's left off.

A speedy service game sees her hold to love to start the second set off. Emphatic, I think you'd call that.

When the ball has been there Osaka has struck it with such venom and has really been able to overpower Garcia. She very much looks like she is playing within her comfort zone, which is how she wants it to be.

    Osaka 5-2 Garcia*

That's more like it from Caroline Garcia, stretching Naomi Osaka out wide before popping a winner straight past her.

    30-40.

Whoops. Osaka gets the angle wrong on that forehand and one set point goes by.

Panic set in there for Garcia, trying to overpress scoreboard pressure.

    Osaka 5-2 Garcia*

    Complete dominance from Naomi Osaka.

She looks like she's merely warming up, blasting ball after ball back at Caroline Garcia, and the Frenchwoman's defence cannot hold up.

    Three set points to Osaka...

  15. Halep and Tomljanovic trade breakspublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    *Halep 3-4 Tomljanovic

Ajla Tomljanovic won four games in a row against second seed Simona Halep to race into a 4-2 lead in the opening set, but Halep has just hit back with another break of her own to put it back on serve.

  16. Osaka a game awaypublished at 08:48 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Osaka 5-2 Garcia*

Naomi Osaka rattles through her service game, wrapping it up with a lovely forehand winner.

Caroline Garcia will have to serve to stay in this set.

  17. Garcia holdspublished at 08:45 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    *Osaka 4-2 Garcia

Better from Garcia, getting to game poin as Osaka whips a body serve just long.

And the Frenchwoman holds as Osaka blazes a backhand into the net post.

She has been striking that backhand so well, Naomi Osaka. She loads up on that leg and is able to produce immense power.

  19. Postpublished at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Osaka 4-1 Garcia*

Naomi Osaka is controlling the baseline exchanges, so Caroline Garcia whistles down a pair of aces to keep her opponent in check.

Every time Garcia gets herself in front, Osaka reels her back in, giving her so little time on the ball. Deuce.

  20. Tomljanovic breaks backpublished at 08:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Halep 2-2 Tomljanovic*

Well, Ajla Tomljanovic has recovered quickly from that stuttering start and broken Simona Halep to bring this one back on serve at 2-2. Much to the enjoyment of the home crowd.
