    Osaka 4-1 Garcia*

An Osaka ace is followed by a double fault, before Caroline Garcia whirls a slice into the net.

Osaka smiles to herself as she aims an angled backhand cross-court and misses, before an ace seals the game. It is so quiet in the Rod Laver Arena, with just a polite smattering of applause for the Japanese as she backs up the break.

I just don't think Caroline Garcia can afford to get into long exchanges with Naomi Osaka, they both strike the ball well from the back of the court but Osaka has the extra power.

That was an impressive exchange from both players - you can see the speed of this court, it really does zip through.

    Osaka 2-1 Garcia*

Nice. Naomi Osaka sends a backhand winner fizzing away to pick up the first point on Caroline Garcia's serve.

She keeps up the pressure with some deep returns, forcing Garcia off balance, and she earns herself two break points in the process.

  6. Murray and Soares start with a winpublished at 08:34 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Murray/Soares 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 Norrie/Giron.

The Murray-Soares partnership is back at a Grand Slam with a bang!

Britain's seven-time major doubles champion Jamie Murray has reunited with Brazilian Bruno Soares for the 2021 season and the 2016 Melbourne champions have just won their opener.

Murray and Soares won 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 against another Brit in Cam Norrie and his American partner Marcos Giron.

    Osaka 2-1 Garcia*

Caroline Garcia gets a look at Naomi Osaka's second serve but can't make it count, blazing a forehand way out of bounds.

That's better from Osaka, serving down the T, and she holds.

    *Osaka 1-1 Garcia

Naomi Osaka comes out on top in a rally, watching as Caroline Garcia nets a forehand from behind the baseline, but Garcia blazes a delightfully angled backhand of her own to keep the game going.

No surprise Osaka hit a double fault, as Garcia has been putting pressure on her behind the second serve.

    *Osaka 1-1 Garcia

Naomi Osaka can't find a first serve but she battles away nicely to get to 30-30, before Caroline Garcia nets a return.

Osaka gets to game point before stumbling into a double fault, and we're at deuce.

  11. Garcia holdspublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    *Osaka 1-1 Garcia

A nice one-two punch puts Caroline Garcia within touching distance of a hold, and this time she prospers with a net cord dribble of her own.

  12. Postpublished at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Osaka 1-0 Garcia*

Caroline Garcia is a former top 10 player but she has had a tough few years in the singles.

She's also a very accomplished doubles player, which she proves with a nifty move to the net to volley over a winner, but Naomi Osaka gets a lucky little net cord to take her to 30-30. Ouch.

  13. Halep breakspublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Halep 2-0 Tomljanovic*

Simona Halep already has the advantage in her second-round meeting with Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic. The second seed broke the home hope in the opening service game of the match.

Osaka is turning very quickly into the complete player. A switch seems to have been flicked over the past year, on court the way she looks at her schedule and way she deals with her opponents is a remarkable set up. She has created this aura of one of the toughest players to beat on tour.

  15. Osaka holdspublished at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

    Osaka 1-0 Garcia*

Naomi Osaka plonks a backhand into the net first up, before she whistles down an ace to get herself on the board.

In fact, make that three aces. Osaka rustles down back-to-back big serves to hold to 15 first up.

  17. 'I see a Serena versus Barty final'published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Marion Bartoli, on who she is backing in the women's singles: "I have been extremely impressed with Ashleigh Barty, she hasn't played a competitive match for more than 12 months but looks like she never stopped - she is extremely focused and I don't feel any rust in her game.

"The two main ones are showing their form and setting the bar, Serena Williams and Ashleigh Barty.

"Naomi Osaka will be able to get into her groove as the tournament goes on but Garbine Muguruza has also been playing some good tennis, those three or four names are really the players I see being on top of the pack.

"If I had to say one final right now, I would say Serena versus Ashleigh Barty."

Caroline Garcia is still dangerous, she can still make it very tough and awkward for Naomi Osaka out here.
