What happens to Kyrgios if he comes through this and then there's no crowds? He could be all over the shop. He's so tuned in to the crowd.

Thiem is a player that likes to get his teeth into a match. He's very physical. That last, quick game on the Austrian's serve does Kyrgios no harm.

  3. 'Great news the tennis can continue'published at 08:39 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

Former British number one Greg Rusedski says it's "great news" the Australian Open can continue.

    Thiem 2-3 Kyrgios*

A routine hold for Thiem in game number five, with Kyrgios, on the stretch, sending a forehand return long, but last year's beaten finalist is still a break down.

    *Thiem 1-3 Kyrgios

Kyrgios sends a forehand into the net from the baseline and that's 30-30. We go to deuce, but with Kyrgios volleying at the net, Thiem drags a forehand wide and then some blistering serving from Kyrgios sees him hold on to his serve.

Serena Williams has not dropped a set in her opening three matches at Melbourne Park

    Earlier today...

Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to beat Anastasia Potapova and reach the Australian Open fourth round.

Tenth seed Williams, bidding for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, came through 7-6 (7-5) 6-2 against the 101st-ranked Russian.

However, the American had trailed 5-3 in an error-strewn first set, and she had to save two set points before dialling back in to win.

"I came out of the blocks not like I have been before," said the 39-year-old, who had dropped only five games in her previous two matches.

"But it's all about surviving and playing better every round."

Williams plays seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the quarter-finals after the Belarusian beat American Ann Li 6-3 6-1.

    Thiem 1-2 Kyrgios*

A service hold to love for Thiem is exactly what the Austrian needs to dampen the crowd's enthusiasm a bit and it has not taken long for Kyrgios to start chipping away at the umpire.

Dominic Thiem's job here is to weather the storm. There will be a dip from Nick Kyrgios at some point.

  9. 'That's who Kyrgios is'published at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Thiem 0-2 Kyrgios

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

I love his approach. Yes, the tweener was perhaps a bit disrespectful, but it gets the crowd involved. That's who Nick Kyrgios is, and it's what the crowd come to see. There is no-one else that is bringing this level of enjoyment and atmosphere to the game right now.

    *Thiem 0-2 Kyrgios

And there's a hold for Kyrgios. He was 40-0 up when he tried the between-the-legs showboating. It nearly backfired as he was taken to deuce, but Kyrgios then gets the job done, followed by another roar.

    Thiem 0-1 Kyrgios*

    Russell Fuller
BBC tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

An underarm serve is a very legitimate tactic against Dominic Thiem, who stands very far back.

  12. Postpublished at 08:28 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Thiem 0-1 Kyrgios*

It has not taken long for the circus tricks to come out of the Kyrgios bag. An underarm serve just doesn't have the legs to get over the net and he then tries a between-the-legs shot but it goes wide.

He is trying to give the crowd value for money already and is already trying to disrupt Thiem's momentum.

Nick Kyrgios needs to get ahead in this match. He had a long second round and if this goes the distance, you'd back Dominic Thiem.

What a start for the Australian as he breaks Thiem's serve at the very first opportunity.

Kyrgios screams out, winds up the crowd and wants even more noise. They have cheered every point he has won so far and they and him have the perfect start.

  17. Watching the watchpublished at 08:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

It is just past 7.20pm in Melbourne and a lot of people will be frantically checking their watches throughout the match.

The reason is that Tennis Australia have announced that all fans need to ensure they are back home by midnight to comply with the mini-lockdown restrictions.

If this turns into a five-set marathon, we could end up with the scenario of loads of fans having to leave before the end of the match.

“Fans will be have to be home by midnight to comply with the new restrictions announced by the Victorian government today," said Tennis Australia. "They will be advised onsite regularly through announcements and screens, with a final announcement at 11.30pm.”

  19. Halep gets early breakpublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Halep 2-1 Kudermetova

Simona Halep had to battle her way into the third round after a thrilling match against Ajla Tomljanovic saw her claw her way back from the brink.

Her reward was a meeting with Veronika Kudermetova - and she's just broken the Russian to take an early lead.

Game, set and match - Karatsevpublished at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Karatsev 6-3 6-3 6-3 Schwartzman

There's been a big surprise in the men's draw in the past half hour as Russian qualifier Aslan Karatsev has just mullered eighth seed Diego Schwartzman.

Karatsev is ranked 114th in the world and is making his first appearance in a Slam main draw.

He hasn't dropped a set since the first round of qualifying and his reward has been to oust Argentine Schwartzman in straight sets.
