  1. Kyrgios breaks, will serve for the setpublished at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Thiem 4-6 4-5 Kyrgios*

A forehand from Thiem... and it's no good. Thiem had saved two break points but can't hold off a third.

Kyrgios is pumped up, the crowd are on their feet and pumped up. Yes, this may be the last time we see a crowd for a while, maybe even for the last time in this tournament, but this is the tennis we all love to see.

The atmosphere is electric and Kyrgios is thriving in this situation. Thiem, looking stunned, needs to break serve or will be two sets down.

  2. 'Kyrgios in Thiem's head'published at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Laura Robson

Kyrgios has to get one of these break ponts because he is very much in Thiem's head right now.

    *Thiem 4-6 4-4 Kyrgios

A cross-court winner saves Thiem and takes us back to deuce. That's two break points the US Open champion has saved in this game.

But wait, he faces another one now.

    *Thiem 4-6 4-4 Kyrgios

A beautifully-disguised drop shot from Thiem saves that break point. Deuce.

But Thiem can only then send a half-volley into the net and it's break point again.

That was a very timid point from Dominic Thiem, inviting Kyrgios forward.

    *Thiem 4-6 4-4 Kyrgios

Thiem sends a sweeping forehand into the net and is muttering away to himself, showing signs of frustration.

His mood is not helped by a superb cross-court winning volley from Kyrgios to bring about a break point, only the second we've seen in this set. The Australian couldn't take the first opportunity. Can he take the second?

    *Thiem 4-6 4-4 Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios opts to dial up the pressure by moving into the net off his serves in the eight game of set two. Three times Thiem can't guide his returns in as the imposing Kyrgios narrows the angles and a hold to love takes us to 4-4.

  8. game, set and match

Game, set and match - Haleppublished at 09:28 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Halep 6-1 6-3 Kudermetova

A much more straightforward route for Simona Halep today, as she outlasts Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets.

Potentially up next for Halep is Iga Swiatek, who blasted past her in the French Open en route to her first major title. Could be a tasty meeting...

    Thiem 4-6 4-3 Kyrgios*

We've only had one break point so far in the second set. That came and vanished for Nick Kyrgios, but he can't get a foothold in that Thiem service game. It's tight and tense and maybe heading for a tie-break to deal with this set.

Thiem 4-3 up on serve in the second after losing the first set.

  10. 'Thiem looking uncomfortable'published at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Thiem 4-6 3-3 Kyrgios

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

You don't see this sort of body language from Thiem very often. He's looking really uncomfortable out there.

  11. Postpublished at 09:24 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Thiem 4-6 3-3 Kyrgios

Apart from some early chipping at the umpire in the early stages of the first set, this has been a very focused and professional job so far from Kyrgios, whose first serve average is coming in at 199km/h.

An ace, walloped down the middle, keeps us on serve after six games of the second set.

    *Thiem 4-6 3-2 Kyrgios

    Gigi Salmon
BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra tennis commentator

This is what Nick Kyrgios lives for. He wants the big guys on the big stage. This is where you tend to get the best out of him.

  13. Postpublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Thiem 4-6 3-2 Kyrgios*

Thiem holds his serve to 15 in the next game. The Austrian wins the opening point of the next game, on the Kyrgios serve, but the home hero smashes away the next point at the net after an attempted lob from Thiem.

  17. Does Kyrgios need a coach?published at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Thiem 4-6 2-1 Kyrgios*

    Miles Maclagan
Former British Davis Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Darren Cahill said a while ago that Kyrgios doesn't need a coach. His shot selection is spot on - he knows how to play. I have to admit, I'd prefer to coach someone like Thiem...

  18. Thiem saves break point to holdpublished at 09:14 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Thiem 4-6 2-1 Kyrgios*

That's a big hold of serve for Dominic Thiem. Nick Kyrgios had a break-point chance that would've seen him a set and a break up and threatening to run away with this.

But Thiem digs deep and forces the error from Kyrgios as a sweeping forehand from deep sails long and we are still on serve in the second set.

Time watch - 8.12pm in Melbourne. Everyone must be home by midnight.

This match is not going to be done anytime soon. We hoped it would be good and it has not disappointed. This could be one of the matches of the tournament.

These are desperate times for Dominic Thiem. He has to hold on here.

  20. Postpublished at 09:09 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Thiem 4-6 1-1 Kyrgios

A two-handed backhand from Kyrgios sees a touch of fortune as it flicks off the tape, that wipes out any speed from the ball and it limps over the net for a winner.

A brutal forehand down the line from Kyrgios gets the crowd, at the Australian's request, on their feet.

But they are sitting down again when Thiem charges to the net and sends away a bullet of a two-handed backhand winner to see off the break-point danger. Deuce.
