    *Thiem 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 1-2 Kyrgios

That's underarm serve number five from Kyrgios, Thiem reads it but the Australian then sends one down the line to win the point.

Kyrgios then does what he needs to as Thiem can't pick up one from off the laces and can only hit it into the middle of the net for another routine hold. Who will blink first?

One bad service game could cost them a place in the tournament. Not this time from Thiem though, a hold to 15 and it's 1-1.

The winner of this one will take on Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, the 18th seed, in the fourth round.

Dimitrov advanced when opponent Pablo Carreno-Busta retired with an injury.

The Bulgarian led 6-0 6-1 when the Spaniard withdrew after taking a medical timeout for abdominal treatment. Dimitrov would've had not used much energy, while this epic must be taking a lot out of both Thiem and Kyrgios

It's a totally different energy from Nick Kyrgios. You can hear the grunts and the effort he is putting in.

NPJ: Kyrgios is an exciting player. We don't want 128 John Isners or David Ferrers playing. Give me Kyrgios or Dan Evans every time. Flair and spark.

Del Mak: Tell me anyone who doesn’t love watching a @NickKyrgios, external match especially with a home crowd to gee him on at @AustralianOpen, external The variety of shots he’s pulling out is enthralling to watch Both players putting on an epic battle.

  7. 'Have to go with Thiem'published at 11:05 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

You feel if Nick had kept his head down slightly in that fourth set, and not been so negative, he could have come through that in four. He had the game for it and probably just enough energy to get through it in four.

As this match goes on, you have to go with Thiem, who looks so fit and fresh. I hope Kyrgios keeps his head down because I don't want to see this get ugly.

  9. Game and fourth set - Thiempublished at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Thiem 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-4 Kyrgios

We're going all the way. A backhand down the line from Kyrgios is out and Thiem, who lost the opening two sets, has fought back to take this to five.

This match always looked like being one of the highlights of day five and it has not disappointed at all. It's been a brilliant match and we're down to a one-set shootout.

  10. Postpublished at 11:01 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

Kyrgios then gets himself a break-back point, but can't take it as Thiem finds the baseline, much to Kyrgios' annoyance.

He then gets a set point.

Kyrgios takes the next two points after that point penalty. But Thiem wins the next one with Kyrgios repeatedly hitting himself in the head with his racquet.

If we go to a fifth, the Australian is going to have a self-induced headache to deal with.

    Miles Maclagan

Nick Kyrgios is down but he is certainly not out. He's found a little energy from somewhere. Has the point penalty fired him up?

  13. Postpublished at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

Kyrgios gets a point penalty for his repeated infringements. He is not happy about it and lets the umpire know his thoughts.

Thiem now three points from the set as we start the 10th game.

Solid stuff from the Austrian, who has stayed laser focus in this set.

  15. Thiem breaks, serving for setpublished at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Thiem 4-6 4-6 6-3 5-4 Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios can save two break points, but not a third. It is just so good from Thiem. He is miles behind the baseline but keeps the point alive and then sends in a cross-court winner from the gods.

He is now going to be serving for the set and we're closing in on a fifth set.

  16. Postpublished at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

Kyrgios needs a great drop-volley as he is facing a second break point, and he produces a moment of magic.

Two break points saved from Kyrgios.

Break points Thiem. Kyrgios once again hurls his racquet.

But then saves the first break point with an excellent serve.

    Thiem 4-6 4-6 6-3 4-4 Kyrgios*

Thiem with a hold to love. A truly brilliant sweeping forehand into the corner is one for the highlights reel.

  19. Postpublished at 10:48 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    *Thiem 4-6 4-6 6-3 3-4 Kyrgios

This is much better from Kyrgios, who has stopped beating himself up after every shot. A perfect service game from Kyrgios keeps us on serve.

He is 4-3 ahead in the fourth. In theory, this match could be done in two games.

Kyrgios gets a drink from the fridge and tries to psyche himself up. A break now would mean he would then be serving for the match. Easier said than done though.

    Thiem 4-6 4-6 6-3 3-3 Kyrgios*

Dominic Thiem mixes up his serve to keep Kyrgios guessing. The home player does win a point in this game, but just the one as a serve tight into the Kyrgios body is then flicked two-handed long. Game.
