That gives the crowd something to get excited about. A sliced backhand from Nadal brings Zverev to the net and he keeps the point alive only to be beaten by a brilliant passing shot down the line for 30-0.

Another sweeping forehand from Nadal and Zverev can only blast one just wide for a hold to love and one of Nadal's best games of the match.

But he's still a break of serve down and needs to take one of the next two Zverev service games or the set will be gone.

Nadal just has to ride the wave right now. The question from him to Zverev will be can you sustain this?

    *Nadal 2-4 Zverev

A rapid-fire hold to love from Zverev, who has already hit 10 winners compared to just the one from Nadal.

Zverev in charge of this one, but there's still a long, long way to go.

    Nadal 2-3 Zverev*

Zverev is able to get Nadal running around the court, but the fifth seed's serve gets him out of trouble in the fifth game and he's still just the one break behind, although the opening 20+ minutes would have already taken a lot out of the 36-year-old.

It is so aggressive from Zverev. He doesn't look bothered by Nadal's shots at all.

    *Nadal 1-3 Zverev

A hold to 30 for Zverev and he's 3-1 ahead, but we've already had 19 minutes of action. Get comfortable - it's going to be an epic.

    Nadal 1-2 Zverev*

Alexander Zverev opts to attack and lurks at the net early in the fourth game. Nadal keeps alive one volley but is helpless to stop the next one. A very positive start from Zverev.

As always with Rafael Nadal, one of the key questions is over his physical state.

The rare foot condition which he has battled since his teenage years - called Mueller-Weiss and which causes pain and bone deformation - flared up again in Rome recently.

Here at Roland Garros he has his personal doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro helping him manage the pain.

And as Novak Djokovic dryly observed after their quarter-final, Nadal has often managed to look as fit as a fiddle just a "few days after he's injured and barely walking".

After that late-night finish against Djokovic, and an extra day off, he's had about 65 hours to rest and recover.

    Nadal 1-2 Zverev*

A huge pump of the fist from Nadal as he gets up and running and gets a game on the board to stop Zverev building any more momentum, although the German still does have an early break.

    Nadal 0-2 Zverev*

Four forehand winners from Zverev already. Nadal, dripping with sweat, is going to have to be at his best to get through this.

How much did the quarter-final epic with Djokovic, which finished at gone 1am local time, take out of the Spaniard?

Nadal is sweating profusely. It really does get humid under the roof.

    *Nadal 0-2 Zverev

Alexander Zverev produces the first ace of the match and that helps him to 40-0, Nadal takes the next two points but a sweeping forehand bulleted into the far corner is too good from the German and Zverev consolidates the break and has stormed into a 2-0 lead.

Zverev is on nine lives in this tournament. He was match point down in his second-round match. Every win he gets now is just a bonus.

  20. Nerves for Nadal?published at 14:12 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Nadal 0-1 Zverev*

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

It's interesting because it's becoming an ever-popular trend to choose to recieve at the coin toss. I think it's for that reason - to try and catch your opponent when they're a little bit cold and with a few nerves. I'm sure even Nadal feels them.
