Zverev's backhand was doing the damage in his quarter-final win against Carlos Alcaraz.

But two crunching forehands were the key to turning that opening game around.

    Nadal 0-1 Zverev*

A dream start for Alexander Zverev as Nadal sends a forehand long and loses his opening service game.

Cool from Zverev who barely acknowledges what he has just done. Not the start most of the fans in the stadium were hoping to see.

    *Nadal 0-0 Zverev

If the first few points are anything to go by, we're all set for a very long afternoon.

Some cracking rallies straight out of the gate before a two-handed backhand from Nadal hits the top of the net for the first break point of the match. Early chance for Zverev.

    *Nadal 0-0 Zverev

Alexander Zverev has never won a Grand Slam title and still haunted by his US Open loss in 2020 when he was two sets up and then two points away from the title only to lose a five-set thriller to Dominic Thiem.

Zverev did though then win Olympic gold for Germany in Tokyo last year.

The German is currently third in the world rankings but will rise to second with a win today. If he wins the whole tournament he will jump to world number one.

Slight pause before kick-off as Nadal gestures something to the umpire and fiddles with his towels.

Feel they will be used a lot today. Very sweaty inside the Chatrier greenhouse.

We did hear during the warm-up the crowd singing Happy Birthday to Rafa. I've only spotted one German flag so far and there's hundreds of Spanish ones. This is definitely Rafa Nadal's court!

This is Zverev's fifth Grand Slam semi-final. He's won just one, against Pablo Carreno-Busta at the US Open.

It was a bizarre match - he was utterly dreadful for the first two sets and then turned it around. He can't afford a slow start against Nadal.

Those not lucky enough to have tickets for the main event are having to watch via the big screens outside, sitting in deckchairs but under umbrellas as the rain lashes down in Paris.

The roof is closed and here we go.

Incredible noise as Rafael Nadal walks out on to court. So loud that it's difficult to hear the person next to you.

A few boos for Zverev as he enters, but it is all pantomime stuff.

Then the crowd burst into an impromptu version of 'Joyeux Anniversaire', serenading Nadal on his 36th birthday.

Will it be a celebration tonight? Or can Zverev poop the party?

We already know who is going to contest the women's final at Roland Garros this year.

American teenager Coco Gauff has reached her first Grand Slam singles final, setting up a tantalising meeting with world number one Iga Swiatek.

Gauff, 18, won 6-3 6-1 against unseeded Italian Martina Trevisan in her maiden major semi-final, after Swiatek had recorded a 34th successive win to move into her second major final.

Swiatek, 21, completed a serene journey into the Roland Garros final with a 6-2 6-1 win over 20th seed Daria Kasatkina.

    "High knees please!"

Always fun to see how excited the ball kids at Roland Garros are when warming up for their big moment.

It's a classic routine too: light jog, high knees, heels to bum, star jumps and another jog to finish.

    Nadal v Zverev

Here come the players. A huge reception for Rafael Nadal. He's absolutely the fan favourite here, not surprising considering his insane record here. He's won 110 matches at Roland Garros, and only ever lost three times.

  20. 'Anything you throw at Nadal, he will still be the favourite'published at 13:55 British Summer Time 3 June 2022

    Nadal v Zverev

    Naomi Cavaday
    BBC Sport tennis commentator

Zverev is a fabulous player and he has been in that top 10 for what seems like forever. The major title has just been a little bit out of reach. He still has the confidence.

He has one victory over Nadal in clay but that was in Madrid, which is Nadal's least favourite of the clay tournaments, and Zverev loves it there as the altitude really helps his serve. It is so different here, though, especially with the conditions.

Anything you throw at Nadal here on Phillipe-Chatrier, he will still be the favourite.
