Raducanu was defending the points, she will be the US Open champion forever. Everyone knew it was going to be a tough year, and I think she has improved as a player. She works really hard and it will come in time.

Here's what Alize Cornet said in her on-court interview:

"I am so tired. I'm sorry guys I know you really like Emma - she's a great player and a great person and I am sorry I beat her tonight.

"I was getting tired from the second set but I hung in there."

"You know I like the drop shots. I don't do it as well as Ons Jabeur but I think my game at the net was pretty good too.

"I think it was a bit of everything, I did a bit of variation and that is what worked tonight."

On what has contributed to her form this year, she added:

"I think I am handling my emotions better, I am just getting old.

"I am really happy because it shows in my results. I am 32 and it is better late than never.

"It was very important to have my best friends and boyfriend by my side - I couldn't do it without you."

Meanwhile, in her record-breaking 63rd consecutive Grand Slam main draw appearance, Alize Cornet has progressed beyond the first round of each major in a calendar year for first time since 2014.

Where life will change is that Raducanu will be very much in demand, but up until now she has been seeded in every tournament - so suddenly there will be no seeding and no protection of playing the top seeds - and no byes.

Emma Raducanu does not stick around for long despite the demand for autographs court-side.

She was second best on the night to an inspired Alize Cornet, losing in the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

Although it wasn't to be on her return to New York, she'll always be the teenage qualifier who won the US Open.

Rafael Nadal serves out the set and now leads this first-round encounter with wildcard Rinky Hijikata.

He needs three set points to see it out, Hijikata unable to lift a return to a powerful serve from the Spaniard.

He may now be a set down, but we're still continuing to see serious flashes of brilliance from Hijikata.

She will have many more matches to come. She is still only a teenager.

But it is just a reminder of how tough tennis is.
