    *Norrie 5-0 Paire

What could be fuelling this top performance from Norrie?

Jonathan Jurejko is in New York and has found one clue.

  2. 'it is not particularly enjoyable to watch'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Norrie 5-0 Paire

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is not particularly enjoyable to watch. Paire is struggling for points, never mind games. It is hard to know what he is going to do out there.

I will say that when you are just cruising, it is very easy for Norrie to have his mind wandering.

The way forward is to approach the net as barely anyone out-rallies Norrie from the back of the court these days.

  3. Norrie claims third breakpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Norrie 5-0 Paire

Oo, what's this? Benoit Paire gets back to 30-30 on his serve.

Oh no, don't worry. He's been broken again. The Frenchman put up more of a fight this time but slaps a forehand way wide to give Norrie a 5-0 lead.

A 6-0 bagel surely en route.

You never know what you're going to get with Benoit Paire, although a catalogue of errors and a general insouciance has been a common sight in recent times.

At Wimbledon he spoke about his "disgust for tennis", then later revealed to French publication Brut that he had been struggling with his mental health.

So far he doesn't look like he is enjoying himself in New York.

  5. Norrie holds to lovepublished at 16:22 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Norrie 4-0 Paire*

Benoit Paire finally manages to get into a rally, but he still ends up whacking his forehand long to go 40-0 down on Norrie's serve.

The Brit soon gets another hold to love. So far this is looking like a lovely draw for Norrie. Could be a quick jog in the New York sun and in for a rest before round two.

  6. 'I am slightly concerned for Paire'published at 16:21 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Norrie 3-0 Paire

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live

I am slightly concerned for Paire - I think he is going to struggle to get games here.

  7. Norrie breaks againpublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Norrie 3-0 Paire

Blink and you'll miss one of these games.

Clearly Norrie isn't bothered by this heat. Benoit Paire, on the other hand, might be wishing he'd shaved off that beard pre-match.

Norrie breaks again to go 3-0 up in just nine minutes.

Blimey, it’s sizzling on court 11.

No wonder there is a strong whiff of sun cream in the air.

The SPF has been slapped on, a hat to protect the bonce is a must, while an icy drink - perhaps a US Open signature Honey Deuce - is optional.

  9. 'Norrie will thrive in these conditions'published at 16:17 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Norrie 2-0 Paire*

    Naomi Broady
British player on BBC Radio 5 Live

Paire is unorthodox and his forehand is not great, with a really extreme grip and it looks like Cameron Norrie has gone out there with a plan to exploit it as he has made Paire hit a lot of forehands already.

Norrie is not the man you wanted to see in the draw next to your name in these conditions. He will just thrive in these conditions.

    Norrie 2-0 Paire*

Well this definitely looks like seventh seed v world number 173 so far.

Norrie holds to love. A long way to go still, obviously, but so far so good.

    *Norrie 1-0 Paire

Paire managed to save the first break point but gave Norrie another shortly after.

The British number one shanks a forehand before getting back into the rally and forcing his opponent to bat the ball long. Good start.

Benoit Paire is all in grey, accessorising with a ginormous beard.

Cam Norrie has done some excellent yellow and aqua blue colour-coordinating.

More importantly, the Brit has already set himself up a break point.

  14. What Norrie did nextpublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Norrie v Paire

Cameron Norrie took a big step out of the British tennis shadows with his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals earlier this year.

The 27-year-old was beaten in four sets by eventual champion Novak Djokovic. Now to see what he can do in New York.

Norrie's best US Open showing came in 2020, when he reached the third round.

You would hope the seventh seed gets through fairly comfortably today against world number 173 Benoit Paire, but the Frenchman can be unpredictable.

What a year it has been for Cam Norrie.

After his breakthrough year in 2021, the 27-year-old leftie has continued his rise and finally achieved the deep run at a major which he craved by reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals.

He's now back inside the world's top 10 and, with Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev missing from New York, has moved up to the seventh seed.

That is significant because it means he cannot face a higher-ranked opponent until the quarter-finals, should he get there.

"That definitely helps in trying to get to the second week. I think especially in the later rounds, it can help," Norrie says.

"At the last two masters I missed out by a bye by one so it was nice to kind of slip inside that then and be top eight. I think it's great."
