    Raducanu v Cornet

After the highs of last years stunning triumph at Flushing Meadows, what will Emma Raducanu's second US Open look like?

Having started last year's tournament in relative obscurity after coming through three rounds of qualifying, the Briton returns to New York 12 months on as the reigning champion - and a global superstar.

Injuries have disrupted Raducanu's year to date, but she displayed her hard court ability in superb wins over Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in Cincinnati earlier this month.

Tonight, she faces a tricky first-round meeting with France's Alize Cornet.

On the way into the Billie Jean King Tennis Center through its South Gate, there is monument containing half a dozen, curved, bronze-plaqued walls.

This is the Court of Champions.

One of the boards contains the names of all of the singles winners in the tournament's history.

The latest of the 141 female names on there is - yes, you've guessed it - Emma Raducanu.

Another tribute from the US Open to its recent champions is shown in the form of large photo banners of the players during their victorious runs.

Lining the avenue between Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, the final canvas pays tribute to Raducanu and fellow 2022 singles winner Daniil Medvedev.

  7. 'You have to start building again'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-6 Evans

Dan Evans has been speaking to Amazon Prime after his dominant win over Jiri Vesely:

"I played very well. It was nice to get back on the match court. It's been quite a while since Cincinnati but it was nice to get out and I played very well.

"I played well the week before and I didn't play great in Cincinnati but it's the first round and the start of a new tournament and you have to start building again.

"I didn't do too much running, I served well and dictated pretty well."

    What are the conditions like?

"Everybody has a different answer - the balls are slow, the courts are fast. It's pretty quick, I thought."

His thoughts on facing either Chris O'Connell or James Duckworth next:

"The Aussies are very good competitors so it will be a tough fight. I will enjoy this for a little bit and recover."

  8. Stephens through, Rybakina a set downpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

American Sloane Stephens is safely through. The 2017 champion came from a set down to beat Belgium's Greet Minnen 1-6 6-3 6-3.

It's not such good news for Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh player had managed to level things at 4-4 in the first set against France's Clara Burel, but was broken again and went on to lose it 6-4. She's now headed for a toilet break, which takes a while when you're out on court 12.

Spanish fourth seed Paula Badosa is in action now too, playing Lesia Tsurenko on Court 17, and so is

  9. Baez forced to retire against Alcarazpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Alcaraz 7-5 7-5 2-0 Baez (ret.)

Well, what a huge shame that is.

Sebastian Baez has contributed more than his fair share to a brilliant meeting with Carlos Alcaraz, but unfortunately he's not able to finish the match.

The Argentine received a medical timeout at the end of a superb second set but he was clearly struggling as he returned for the third.

Carlos Alcaraz easily broke for a 2-0 lead, before Baez took the sensible decision to retire.

You can't fault Dan's attitude throughout this match. He has been a bundle of energy and full of positivity.

He will be really happy and rightfully so. It was a really clinical performance, much more energy and intensity with his shots.

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-6 Evans

Well he won't get it much easier than that. Dan Evans wraps up a 6-4 6-1 6-1 win over Jiri Vesely in under two hours with his 11th ace of the day.

A dominant victory and he's through to the second round of the US Open, where he'll face an Australian in the form of either James Duckworth or Chris O'Connell.

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-5 Evans*

Jiri Vesely lets slip a 30-0 lead with little fight and hands Dan Evans break point with a forehand pushed just wide.

He then gifts Evans the break, finding the net from close range and the Brit will serve for the win.

These are super-quick service games from Evans and Vesely is not really putting the work in to make these games competitive again.

    *Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-4 Evans

Easy peasy lemon squeezy for Dan Evans as he careers to a love hold, delivering the final blow with an ace.

He needs just two more games and then a place in the US Open second round is his.

  16. Evans breakspublished at 19:36 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-3 Evans*

There we have it. Dan Evans goes a break up in this third set.

He brings up break point to 30 with a lovely forehand into the corner, so powerful that Vesely left it thinking it was heading out.

The world number 23 then converts the break point with another forehand winner, falling to one knee with a signature roar.

  17. Game and second set - Alcarazpublished at 19:31 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Alcaraz 7-5 7-5 0-0 Baez

Once again, Carlos Alcaraz produces when it matters to take the second set against Sebastian Baez on Arthur Ashe.

The Spaniard eventually managed to clinch his fourth set point on the Baez serve to close out an epic second set after one hour and 23 minutes.

Can the third seed get the job done in three? Baez is receiving some attention from the trainer after that huge effort.

    *Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-2 Evans

Dan Evans is so in control and yet he's playing every point with as much effort as he would if he was up against it.

The points go back and forth across the net before Evans holds to 30, sealing the game with a cross-court forehand. Vesely had genuinely already started walking towards his chair as Evans hit that final ball.

  19. Kvitova through to second roundpublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

After a testing first set against Russia's Erika Andreeva, Czech 21st seed Petra Kvitova races to victory in the second, winning 7-6 (7-3) 6-0.

Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens is up and running on Louis Armstrong Stadium too. After losing the first set 6-1 against Belgium's Greet Minnen, the 2017 winner won the second set 6-3 and is 3-0 up in the decider.

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is a break down against France's Clara Burel, trailing 3-2 in the first set.

    Gigi Salmon
    BBC Sport tennis commentator

It is almost like I am watching a player in slow motion even when Vesely is bouncing the ball.

But Vesely still has that weapon of a serve. Evans is chuntering away, and Vesely just looks bemused.
