    Vesely 4-6 1-6 1-1 Evans*

At 30-0 up, Vesely sends wide a forehand that he really should have landed, and after taking the next point, can only stand and watch as Evans pings a backhand winner.

Vesely then looks sluggish as he fluffs a return at the net, but he's able to hold on the advantage.

Jiri Vesely has never come back from two sets down to win, and the way things are going, that's not about to change today.

Dan Evans holds the opening game of the third set to 15, seeing it out with an ace and a pump of his racquet.

  3. Alcaraz & Baez in second-set battlepublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Alcaraz 7-5 5-5 Baez

This is some contest between Carlos Alcaraz and Sebastian Baez on Arthur Ashe.

After two hours, these two exciting talents are still locked in an enthralling second-set battle. Having broken back for 2-2, Baez then edged 4-3 ahead after another long game - but Alcaraz responded immediately and we're currently level at 5-5.

The Spanish third seed struck late in the first set. Will he do the same again?

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 0-0 Evans*

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Evans is not having to do very much. Vesely's legs just died in that second set and I would be very surprised if he has enough in him to just hold serve.

  5. 'Excellent work'published at 19:15 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 0-0 Evans*

    Russell Fuller
    Tennis correspondent at Wimbledon

There is little fight left in Vesely's legs and in his heart, it would appear.

It's a good day for Evans to get a quick win.

    Excellent work.

  6. Game and second set Evanspublished at 19:15 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Vesely 4-6 1-6 0-0 Evans*

It all looks to be going so easy for Dan Evans, as he flies to 0-40 and break and set point.

But not so fast, says Jiri Vesely. He saves the first set point, then the second, but can't make it a third, shooting too long. Evans wins the second set 6-1 and he's very, very happy about it.

  7. 'Vesely has dropped off a cliff'published at 19:12 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Vesely 4-6 1-5 Evans

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Vesely has dropped off a cliff. Floating returns long, so many double faults. He has just lost all his energy.

Evans will enjoy that as it is getting hotter and hotter outside.

    *Vesely 4-6 1-5 Evans

Everything is going Dan Evans' way right now.

He looked to be heading to a second game without dropping a point but allows Vesely one back, before holding to 15.

He's one game away from securing the second set.

  9. Evans double break uppublished at 19:06 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Vesely 4-6 1-4 Evans*

Wow. Dan Evans is really not messing about here as he races to 0-40 on Vesely's serve.

He capitalises on the Czech's weariness to break to love, Vesely handing him the game with a half-hearted pass into the net.

  10. Pliskova reaches second roundpublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

Czech 22nd seed Karolina Pliskova was made to work hard for her first-round win.

She eventually beat Poland's Magda Linette 6-2 4-6 7-6 (10-8) in two hours and 33 minutes.

Pliskova's compatriot Petra Kvitova was two breaks of serve down against Russian Erika Andreeva, but bounced back to take the first set 7-6 (7-3).

Sloane Stephens is a set down but has just claimed a break of serve in the second set against Belgian Greet Minnen.

Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina is on court now too, facing France's Clara Burel.

    *Vesely 4-6 1-3 Evans

Dan Evans has hit three aces so far in this second set and Jiri Vesely's head has dipped.

Evans holds to 15 and he's well in control of proceedings here.

    Vesely 4-6 1-2 Evans*

    Russell Fuller

Evans took a break after Wimbledon - he was bitterly disappointed with that early loss against Jason Kubler.

He loves the US Open, he was telling me he loves Wimbledon because of what it means to British players - but it just didn't work out for him.

He is not playing doubles here this year - mainly because of Davis Cup straight afterwards, so he is rationing his time on court.

  13. Evans breakspublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    Vesely 4-6 1-2 Evans*

Dan Evans is oozing confidence, and he puts it to good use by flying to 0-40 up and earning himself a first break point of this second set.

Vesely hands the break to him, pinging a forehand wide, and Evans roars as he walks back towards his chair.

  14. Postpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Vesely 4-6 1-1 Evans

Dan Evans slams an ace down the middle to get his service game started, and after conceding the next point, plays a blinder of a forehand winner to take the lead once again.

Another follows to bring up game point and he gobbles it up with an ace into the corner.

As soon as the rally goes three, four, five shots, Vesely completely slows down with his footwork.

For his ranking he plays a lot of Challenger events, which I find very confusing.

It can't be confidence - because he is not doing that well on the Challengers.

    Vesely 4-6 1-0 Evans*

After a quick trip back to the locker rooms for both players and a change of sweaty kit, world number 68 Jiri Vesely holds to 15 as the second set gets going.

  17. Alcaraz and Isner ahead, Nakashima throughpublished at 18:47 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Alcaraz 7-5 2-2 Baez

Carlos Alcaraz and Sebastian Baez have just played out a couple of brilliant games at the start of the second set, including a 14-minute battle featuring several ridiculous rallies - at the end of which Baez was able to break back.

He's just held on under intense pressure to level at 2-2, with the crowd rising to their feet after some incredible defensive play kept him alive long enough to see Alcaraz miss. This is proving quite the crowd pleaser on Arthur Ashe!

Elsewhere in the men's draw, American John Isner is now two sets to the good against Argentine Federico Delbonis, leading 6-3 6-1 over on Grandstand.

Another home player, Brandon Nakashima, has just sealed victory against Russian Pavel Kotov, winning 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-2.

Earlier today, British number one Cameron Norrie overcame Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-0 7-6 (7-1) 6-0, while Bulgarian 17th seed Grigor Dimitrov defeated American Steve Johnson 6-3 6-2 6-2.

    BBC Sport at Flushing Meadows

Need to plan your evening and sleep around the US Open? Well, the order of play on the New York show-courts is already out to help you organise things.

Britain's former world number one Andy Murray plays early again, this time when he opens up on Ashe against American wildcard Emilio Nava (17:00 BST).

The other star attraction is, of course, Serena Williams. The American great opens up the night session on Ashe - guaranteed to be another fervent atmosphere - when she plays Estonian second seed Anett Kontaveit (00:00 BST, Wednesday).

Meanwhile, 20-year-old Jack Draper plays Canadian sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first night match on Armstrong, while Harriet Dart - fresh from the biggest win of her career against Russian 10th seed Daria Kasatkina - is still waiting to find out where she will play.

    Full Ashe schedule:

Andy Murray (GB) v Emilio Nava (US)

Elena Gabriela Ruse (Rom) v Coco Gauff (US) [12]

Serena Williams (US) v Anett Kontaveit (Est) [2]

Daniil Medvedev (Rus) [1] v Arthur Rinderknech (Fra)

  19. 'Evans keeping his service games quick'published at 18:43 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Vesely 4-6 Evans

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

It could have been a trickier set but in the end it wasn't really even that physical for both players. Evans is trying to keep his service games quick. Vesely, to me, seems to be the one struggling with the conditions.

Dan is making a lot of returns, and losing that first set is not great for Vesely, because he is looking quite tired.

  20. Game and first set Evanspublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 30 August 2022

    *Vesely 4-6 0-0 Evans

Vesely has certainly started to find his feet here but it's not quite enough to stop Evans from seeing out the first set.

He holds to 30 in his final service game of that opening set and that's just the start he'll have been hoping for.
