Vesely still has that weapon in his locker - he comes up with the big serves when he needs them. It is a good hold for Vesely and at least he can ask Evans the question.

A fine, fine forehand is perfectly placed to earn Evans the first point on Vesely's serve - so finely placed that Vesely left it, convinced it was heading for between the tramlines.

From there, the points go back and forth across the net - including another ace from Vesely - and the Czech has to save break and set point with a forehand winner after sending Evans the wrong way.

The Brit earns himself another chance of closing out the set on a break but again it goes begging, and Vesely sees out the hold with another ace.

In the women's draw, 16th seed Jelena Ostapenko has fallen at the first hurdle.

The Latvian was beaten 6-3 3-6 6-4 by Chinese world number 39 Qinwen Zheng.

It's happier news for ninth seed Garbine Muguruza, who made it through in straight sets, beating Dane Clara Tauson 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

Sloane Stephens - US Open champion in 2017 - lost the first set 6-1 against Belgium's Greet Minnen. Minnen has won an early break of serve in the second set on Louis Armstrong.

Czech 22nd seed Karolina Pliskova is into a final-set tie-break against Poland's Magda Linette.

Pliskova's compatriot Petra Kvitova is two breaks of serve down against Russian Erika Andreeva, who leads the first set 5-2.

This is a perfect first round match for Dan Evans. He makes two balls and then Vesely throws down an error. There aren't any long rallies.

Is Vesely starting to adapt to the hot conditions? He puts up more of a fight on Evans' serve this time around, moving to 15-30 up before Evans steps up with a forehand crashed into the corner.

Evans then does an Evans with a beautifully-weighted lob over Vesely's head to move to game point, and from there he gets the hold. He celebrates that with a huge roar.

Having taken the first set with a first break of serve in the 12th game, it is now four games in a row for Carlos Alcaraz as he looks to kick on in the second set.

The Spanish teenager eventually takes his fourth break point on Argentine Sebastian Baez's serve to lead by a set and a break on Arthur Ashe.

It's so far, so good for the third seed, who could end the fortnight as the top-ranked men's player. One thing at a time, though.

It's a first love-hold of the day for Vesely, his powerful serve helping him along the way.

While they grab a drink, let's have a look at what else is happening at Flushing Meadows.

Another ace is on the agenda as Evans races to 30-0, but he flips a forehand wide to give Vesely a glimmer of hope.

That glimmer doesn't last long, Vesely shooting wide off the forehand to gift Evans the hold.

There is no movement around the ball from Vesely, no recovery, and when you compare it to Dan Evans who is so light on his feet and one of the better movers in the game, it's a stark contrast.

Dan Evans' energy right now is far superior to that of his opponent, but he's forced to have a word with himself as he twice sends backhand returns too long.

Vesely holds to 15, seeing it out with a powerful serve that Evans can only deflect into the net.

Vesely has never done that well at the US Open. He made the third round in 2015 but a fair few first round losses and retirements.

The last few years have not been fun for him.

Dan Evans goes 0-30 up on Jiri Vesely's serve but the Czech battles back into the game, before crashing a return into the net to hand Evans a break point.

He had four and failed to convert any in the opening game of this first set, but no mistake this time - he breaks at the first time of asking as Vesely once again finds the net.

An easy - and quick - hold to 15 for Dan Evans, wrapping it up with a simple backhand volley at the net.

That will settle any opening match jitters that may be lingering.

Vesely is not looking the fittest that I have seen him, and Dan has worked so hard on fitness, so he probably feels pretty confident.

Vesely is looking very hot and bothered already and he is taking so much time.

If the first game of this encounter is anything to go by, we may be in for the long haul here. Three aces, four break points...

A couple of unforced errors from Jiri Vesely are followed up by a cracking winner off the forehand from Evans, but he then fails to convert three break points and Vesely brings up deuce.

Evans gets the first advantage but his Czech opponent once again staves off break point, and Vesely is then able to hold on his third game point.

An early opportunity missed by the Brit.

Cam Norrie joins fellow Brits Andy Murray, Harriet Dart and Jack Draper in the US Open second round.

The seventh seed will play Portuguese world number 59 Joao Sousa or American world number 77 McKenzie McDonald next. McDonald is currently a set up in their first-round match and it's gone to a tie-break in the second set.

Cam Norrie told Amazon Prime after his first-round win against France's Benoit Paire: "I was actuallty pretty nervous. It's a pretty unpredictable match against Benoit.

"It was a quick first set but it's pretty dangerous sometimes winning sets 6-0. He played well to break me to serve for the second set.

"He kind of went away in the third which I'll take every day of the week when it's this hot.

"I don't mind it [the heat]. I'm able to block it out better than other guys.

"When it's hot and humid like this the ball is flying. You have to be really sharp. I did a good job of that today."

That helps Norrie to get on and off in an hour and a half. When the conditions are this tough, that physical advantage that he has over opponents is really going to come into play.
