  1. Draper looking to back up big winpublished at 18:55 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Khachanov v Draper

Jack Draper has had some stunning wins this year.

As well as ousting Auger-Aliassime on Wednesday, he beat world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Canadian Open after coming through qualifying to reach the main draw.

He has also notched notable wins over Diego Schwartzman, Dominic Thiem and Lorenzo Sonego.

As we see so often, it is the poor racquet which takes the brunt of the blame.

Murray’s frustrations are illustrated by him sliding the offending instrument across the court and sending it further towards tennis heaven (or hell) with a whack on the court.

Once the set goes, he turns and gestures to his team. Time for some tactical input from Lendl? Or is it too late already?

Not a bad set of tennis from Andy Murray but the double faults reared their head just when he didn't need it. Berrettini so solid throughout.

  4. Game and second set Berrettinipublished at 18:54 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    *Murray 4-6 4-6 0-0 Berrettini

Andy Murray is paddling hard, but he is swimming against the tide with these serve stats.

Matteo Berrettini, so tidy off the tee, racks up 40-0 and then sees a straightforward backhand streak long off the strings.

Murray will have to take the longest road if he is to make the fourth round.

Those pesky double faults, twice on break points. They have been few and far between but Murray has felt the pressure.

The grunt from Berrettini when he hammered back a forehand which rocked Murray on the way to 0-30 was as intimidating as monosyllabic response from Mr T.

  7. Berrettini breakspublished at 18:49 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Murray 4-6 4-5 Berrettini*

Andy Murray scrapes back the first break point with an ace - only the Briton's second of the match.

But he folds out of the second with another double fault - his third of the match and the second on a break point.

Murray's racquet is sent sliding across the court surface in frustration before his tournament towel is thrashed and trashed at the changeover.

That silky, silky drop shot - Berrettini has hit it so well.

  9. Three break points Berrettinipublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    *Murray 4-6 4-4 Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini brings up 0-30 with a ripped forehand followed by a precise backhand dink out of Murray's reach.

A big return then moves Berrettini 0-40 and three break points...

    *Murray 4-6 4-4 Berrettini

Sometimes Matteo Berrettini kicks the front door down with that booming serve.

But he can do the cat burglar act just as well as he shows tip-toeing in behind a fizzing slice to cut down Andy Murray's angles and force the error.

That point makes good the Italian's escape from deuce.

This set is edging into straight-knockout territory. Any break now is likely to be decisive.

  11. Draper getting under way shortlypublished at 18:43 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Khachanov v Draper

Veronika Kudermetova has just swept into the fourth round over on Grandstand, which means it is almost time for Jack Draper.

The Brit is looking to back up his stunning win over sixth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and reach the fourth round of a major in just his second Grand Slam main draw appearance.

Standing in his way is Russian 27th seed Karen Khachanov, who has never gone beyond this stage in New York.

Are we in a time warp? Feels like we’re back in 2012.

Murray’s footwork is niftier than Michael Flatley’s step.

He superbly scampers forward to meet that drop-shot and whip away the winner, then neatly dances around a ball kid and between the chairs.

That knockout blow brings out the upper cut and jab celebration combo, with those fans ringside going wild in response.

He was very quick off the mark for the drop shot there, Murray. I thnk he is starting to read the grip changes from Berrettini a little bit quicker.

    Murray 4-6 4-3 Berrettini*

When you get the double fist pump from Murray - a below-the-belt jab followed by the thin-air uppercut - you know it is good. And it is.

Murray runs down Matteo Berrettini's dinky drop volley and swats a winner across court, before side-stepping the umpire's chair and celebrating wildly.

If that is what a metal hip can do for you, I would book in to get my whole skeleton turned titanium.

  15. 'Murray fabulous from baseline'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    *Murray 4-6 3-3 Berrettini

Murray's first-serve percentage is still lower than it needs to be. It's going to make it harder for him to take Berrettini the distance. From the baseline, though, he looks fabulous.

  16. Jabeur survives wobble to advancepublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Jabeur 4-6 6-4 6-3 Rogers

Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur is through to the fourth round for the first time at Flushing Meadows.

She had to do it the hard way - she led the final set 5-1 but was broken by American Shelby Rogers as she attempted to serve out the match.

However, Rogers couldn't close the advantage down and again and Jabeur established the crucial break to secure her place in the fourth round.

Jabeur will play either Veronika Kudermetova or Dalma Galfi next.

A brutal love service game from Matteo Berrettini.

The Italian is clocking 75% of first serves in. When you are racking up mid 130mphs on the speed gun as well, it is always going to be difficult for the guy at the other end.

  18. Postpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

Berrettini isn’t happy with his racquet for some reason, perhaps related to the string tension.

It looks like he is going to swap instruments and wanders over to seat for little rifle through his bag.

Then the Italian decides he will stick with his original weapon of choice.

  19. Murray holdspublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 2 September 2022

    Murray 4-6 3-2 Berrettini*

Andy Murray squints hard and squeaks home from the sunny end of the court.

Matteo Berrettini has him in a bit of bother at 30-30, but Murray's serve holds firm. Berrettini is really working hard to make this drop-shot tactic work, peeling another back-spinning attempt off his strings on the final point. Just wide.

This year is, of course, the 10th anniversary of Andy Murray's maiden Grand Slam victory. How could you forget?

Banners of the former champions loom over the avenue between Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Murray's image from that year's tournament is next to another familiar figure....
