    Laura Robson
Former British number one at Flushing Meadows

That game has just reminded me of the other night, when Serena was 40-0 up on serve and she had a minor slip in concentration and started overplaying the first serve in particular. But she got it back just fine the other night...

  2. Tomljanovic breaks backpublished at 01:37 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    *Tomljanovic 7-5 1-4 Williams

No orders for bagels this time round. A much trickier game to navigate for Williams and she's broken by Tomljanovic on the second attempt.

The Aussie can't convert a first break point but can a second and she's given herself a chance in this second set.

A lovely show of sportsmanship among that from Williams, as she applauded a fine cross-court shot from Tomljanovic early in the game.

    Onwards.

This is the best tennis I've seen Serena play in years.

  4. Williams breaks againpublished at 01:29 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Tomljanovic 7-5 0-4 Williams*

Serena Williams is on the rampage.

She brings up break point with a corker of a forehand into the corner, before ripping a backhand to seal the break.

The crowd is going wild, and Billie Jean King has got her phone out, capturing a snap of the moment.

Never going to be a fan of the Ashe crowd cheering and clapping Tomljanovic's double faults.

Sorry. Not even if it benefits their girl, Serena.

  6. Garcia takes first set over Andreescupublished at 01:24 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Andreescu 3-6 Garcia

Former champion Bianca Andreescu will have to get into the fourth round the hard way.

She's dropped the first set to France's Caroline Garcia, who won the Cincinnati Open in the build-up to Flushing Meadows.

    *Tomljanovic 7-5 0-3 Williams

Williams rattles off two points before Tomljanovic earns one back, though Williams swiftly puts the game to bed with ace after ace.

After losing four back-to-back games, she's now won three in succession.

  9. 'Nifty net play from Williams'published at 01:21 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Tomljanovic 7-5 0-2 Williams

    Laura Robson
Former British number one at Flushing Meadows

Again, somehow, Serena is finding some extra energy. I thought Tomljanovic had that point because Serena was half a step slow coming forward. It was nifty net play.

    Tomljanovic 7-5 0-2 Williams*

Bloomin' brilliant stuff from Serena Williams.

She gets the break with a delightful volley off the backhand at the net and she's now in control of this second set. Tomljanovic is doing absolutely nothing wrong, mind you.

  11. Break point Williamspublished at 01:20 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

Are the tables turning once again?

Serena Williams gets break point with a fantastic forehand return.

    *Tomljanovic 7-5 0-1 Williams

Williams gets the first advantage but a Tomljanovic return leaves her sprawling on the court and back to deuce we go.

Huge roars are the response as she brings up another advantage with a lovely forehand strike, and she moves to hold. A huge one, that.

Despite that, Tomljanovic suddenly has a spring in her step.

Serena Williams looked to be putting a stop to Ajla Tomljanovic's four-game winning streak, but then...

After holding a 40-0 lead and looking set for the love hold, she's allowed Ajla Tomljanovic back into her service game to level.

    Deuce.

For the first time in the singles this week Serena Williams is not the frontrunner.

Winning the opening set, you felt, would be crucial.

Firstly to get the adrenalin and confidence pumping around the 40-year-old's body, and secondly to feed it further from the crowd's energy.

All feels a bit flat here now.

That felt like a set that Serena really needed to win. I feel like the three-setter the other night must have taken so much out of her physically.

  19. Game and first set Tomljanovicpublished at 01:09 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Tomljanovic 7-5 0-0 Williams*

More errors from Serena Williams see Ajla Tomljanovic canter to a 40-0 lead and three set points.

She can't seal the deal on the first, nor the second, but it's third time lucky as she perfectly places a forehand on the line.

Williams is going to have to come from behind if her farewell tour is to continue.

    *Tomljanovic 6-5 Williams

I don't think Serena is moving forward as well as she was the other night, but she has not seized up by any means. She wants to hit through the ball but that plays into Tomljanovic's hands.
