First break point saved, Gauff can only send Sabalenka's powerful serve wide.

But wait! The Belarusian misses the forehand and slams into the net.

    Gauff is in business.

Oops, double fault for Sabalenka. She had already sent a forehand long on the previous point. 0-30.

Potential opportunity building here for Gauff.

That is a good sign. Coco is hitting forehand winners and showing that she is really loosening up.

They're very different tennis players. Aryna Sabalenka is just all out raw power. When she's on fire and she's connecting with the ball she reminds me of Serena Williams who could just take the racquet away from so many opponents.

With Coco Gauff it has been slow and steady progress. She had a bit of a stalling time in her career and now she's forging ahead. She's got the guidance of Brad Gilbert in her team and I think he's made a huge amount of difference. There's a lot more variety in her game.

    But honestly anything could happen.

    Gauff 1-2 Sabalenka*

Better from Gauff and she is up and running in this US Open final as Sabalenka slams one of her trademark powerful shots into the net.

Hopefully that has settled some nerves for the 19-year-old.

    Sabalenka has come to play.

Little sign of the stress she showed in opening moments her titanic semi-final against Madison Keys.

She is asking questions of Gauff's forehand with her groundstrokes and already hitting thumping winners off both wings.

The home fans are trying to help settle Gauff with enthusiastic encouragement.

Every time Gauff steps up to the baseline this incredibly expectant American crowd roar into life.

    No pressure, Coco.

  10. Sabalenka holdspublished at 21:27 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    *Gauff 0-2 Sabalenka

Looks like Sabalenka took one to the mush there but she's good to carry on.

A straight forward hold to 15 in the end for the Belarusian.

Gauff is certainly looking the more nervy of the two, sending one wide to concede the game.

  11. 'Sabalenka attacking Gauff forehand'published at 21:23 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    Gauff 0-1 Sabalenka*

Aryna Sabalenka has shown that she was going to attack the Coco Gauff forehand. That is where the challenge is going to lie.

  12. Lapthorne/Ramphadi break back in set twopublished at 21:23 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    *Lapthorne/Ramphadi 1-6 1-2 Schroder/Vink

The wheelchair quad doubles title appeared to be getting away from Britain's Andy Lapthorne and South Africa's Donald Ramphadi on Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Dutch top seeds Sam Schroder and Niels Vink maintained their momentum after dominating the first set and quickly asserted themselves in the second, an early break moving them 2-0 up.

But Lapthorne and Ramphadi have responded to bring set two back on serve.

No mistake this time as Sabalenka brings up another break point and the new world number one slams a winner inch perfect into the back corner of the court.

    Sabalenka strikes first.

  14. Gauff saves break pointpublished at 21:21 British Summer Time 9 September 2023

    *Gauff 0-0 Sabalenka

Ahhh, Sabalenka goes for the backhand volley and smashes it into the net after Gauff had been dragged around the Arthur Ashe court by Sabalenka's big hitting.

    Deuce.

The first thing you do when you enter the Billie Jean King Tennis Centre from Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is walk through a shrine to the US Open's former champions.

On the left as you come in, you see a curved grey wall with brass honours boards affixed to them.

A new one will be etched into the wall after today.

Will it be an American for the first time since 2017? Or a Belarusian for the first time ever?

The American pageantry might not be everybody’s cup of tea but it is certainly a spectacular sight.

Grammy Award-winning singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, accompanied by pianist Sullivan Fortner, beautifully belts out "America the Beautiful".

Everyone inside Ashe who can stand does.

The all-girl ball crew march in with a giant Stars and Stripes which is unfurled across the court.

Earlier I saw them bringing it inside the stadium from the plaza, carrying it like a carpet and politely asking punters to get out of the way.
